The Great White Throne Judgment

April 26, 2007

by Shawn Brasseaux

Today, when a lost person dies, his or her soul descends into hell; the physical body, on the other hand, is buried in the earth. The soul will stay there in hell’s torments until God brings it before His throne for the ultimate judgment (which is still future from us today). Let us consider what Revelation 20:11-15 KJV says:

“11 And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.
12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.
13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.
14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.”

The above passage in the Bible describes what we call “the Great White Throne Judgment” (see verse 11). If we were to put this event on the Bible’s timeline, it would be beyond this the Dispensation of Grace, beyond the seven-year Tribulation and beyond the Millennial (1000-Year) Reign of Christ on earth. In other words, the Great White Throne Judgment is at least 1,007 years away from our present day. Just what is this event, and why is it necessary?

According to John 5:22 KJV: “For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:” God the Father has “committed all judgment unto the Son.” The Person on the throne in Revelation 20:11 is the Lord Jesus Christ. The lost of all the ages will stand before God (Jesus Christ) so that they can be “judged according to their works.” This is not to be confused with the “Judgment Seat of Christ” (which is a special day reserved for us Christians, members of the Church the Body of Christ). Daniel 7:10 also makes reference to the Great White Throne Judgment.

At the Great White Throne Judgment, a lost soul will have his or her chance to stand before God Almighty and be sentenced to the ultimate penalty for being a child of Adam—the everlasting lake of fire! This second death is that which was spoken of in Romans 6:23 “the wages [plural] of sin is death.” The Bible speaks of physical death as the first death, when the spirit and soul are separated from the physical body. The second death involves a person’s soul being eternally separated from God’s righteous presence. Revelation 21:8 KJV says, “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

We will now return to Revelation chapter 20. Verse 11 speaks of “heaven and earth fleeing” from the Lord’s face. If we compare that to 2 Peter 3:10,12, we see similar language. The Apostle Peter writes: “But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up…. Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?” Surely, the Bible prophesies the complete destruction of our present universe (including planet earth).

If we consider Revelation 20:12, we understand that God will judge lost mankind on the basis of “books.” One of those books is the “book of life;” this book contains the names of all the saints of all the dispensations (Philippians 4:3). Lost people will each be given an opportunity to see their names absent from the list of the saved of the ages (the book of life).

Revelation 20:12 also mentioned “books.” These are the records of the deeds of lost people—a record of every action and every word spoken by the lost person in life (Proverbs 15:3, Matthew 12:36, and Hebrews 4:13 verify that God witnesses every deed done and every work spoken). God will use these as evidences for convicting the lost people: “every man [will be judged] according to their works.” Again, Revelation 21:8 said: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Finally, Revelation 20:12 says the “small and great” will stand before the Lord for judgment—every unbeliever, from kings to peasants, from slaves to presidents, clergymen, and from billionaires to peasants. In Philippians 2:10-11, we are told “every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess to that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Every atheist, agnostic, and unbeliever will have no other choice but to admit that Jesus Christ is the Saviour, the Son of God. They will be forced to admit that Jesus Christ is Lord, before being sent to the lake of fire.

What happened to the bodies of those burned at the stake or lost at sea? Revelation 20:13 says that God will resurrect them! It sounds impossible, but remember that nothing is impossible with God! God will return the lost soul to its physical body, and then the lost soul will be cast into the lake of fire (verse 14). Verse 15 reads: “And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.”

SUPPLEMENT:

How could a loving God send people to a place of everlasting suffering? This is one of the most common objections regarding this topic. Romans 1:20 says that everyone is “without excuse” in regards to knowing that God exists—creation declares that the Creator God exists. Everyone will have had at least one chance to come a knowledge of salvation (John 1:9,10; Colossians 1:23; Titus 2:11). “The grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared unto all men.” One of the points of judgment by which God will judge a lost person is how often the person heard God’s Word and how often the person rejected it in unbelief. Their punishment will not only be based on how much they heard from the Word of God and how much they rejected, but also what other deeds they committed in life.

In other words, the more they heard of God, and the more they rejected Him, the harsher (and hotter) their punishment will be in eternity. Again, God will be absolutely fair, as they chose to be there. The Lord Jesus Christ “tasted death for every man,” so they did not have to go there (Hebrews 2:9)! They had a chance to escape (by trusting Jesus Christ), but they refused. A person who goes to the lake of fire is the only person to blame for that tragedy.

I AM (From Eternity Past)

2010 Update

God is too transcendent for our puny minds to understand. What He has revealed about Himself in His Word is still beyond our comprehension. We are not expected to fully understand God and His ways of doing things and why He does them in the manner in which He does. However, we are expected to believe what He tells us, no matter how bizarre or impossible it may seem to us. In this Bible study, we will examine the Bible to answer the questions—Who is Jesus anyway, and when did He come about? Where did Jesus come from?

According to the Bible, the Lord Jesus Christ always existed as a Spirit before manifesting Himself in a physical body: He did not first appear in the manger in Bethlehem. Jesus is God the Son and He existed long before Bethlehem—He is from eternity past. Micah 5:2, which spoke Israel’s coming Messiah, Jesus, says: “But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.” From where is Jesus Christ? From “everlasting.” This verse proves Jesus Christ is God, for only God is everlasting. Unfortunately, modern Bibles remove this word “everlasting” from Micah 5:2!!!

In fact, Jesus Christ was the Creator God of Genesis 1:1 (Ephesians 3:9; Colossians 1:15-18; Hebrews 1:2). Many people do not realize that Jesus Christ is the Creator and the visible image of the invisible God. “For in him [Christ Jesus] dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily” (Colossians 2:9). Jesus Christ is the “firstborn [origin] of every creature” (Colossians 1:15). The triune Godhead is invisible, but God the Son stepped outside of it and assumed a tangible form.

John 1:1,14 say: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.” Jesus Christ, God the Son, in His Old Testament form is called the “LORD God” (for instance, see Genesis chapters 2 and 3). The “LORD” is called “JEHOVAH” in the Old Testament (see King James Bible verses Genesis 22:14, Exodus 6:3, Exodus 17:15, Judges 6:24, Isaiah 12:2, and Isaiah 26:4).

Let us consider Exodus 33:20-23 KJV:

“20 Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.
21 And the LORD said, Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock:
22 And it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a clift of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by:
23 And I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face shall not be seen.”

Wow, imagine God covering you with His hand, and you glimpsing His glory from the rear! Over 1500 years later, this LORD God was the same Person of the Godhead who became Jesus of Nazareth, the promised King and Messiah of Israel!

On Mount Sinai, the LORD God (again, this is God the Son) appeared unto Moses in the form of a burning bush (Exodus chapter 3). God explains to Moses that He has heard the cries of the Israelites, and God promises to deliver them from their bondage in Egypt. Moses is surprised to learn that God will send him to lead the Jews out of Egypt. Now, the Jews have been in captivity in Egypt for 430 years (Exodus 12:40), and the Egyptians were polytheistic (the belief of many gods and goddesses).

While in Egypt for all those years, the Jews were used to hearing about the Egyptians’ false idols. If Moses would tell the Jews that God had spoken to him, the Jews would have asked Moses what was the name of this God (remember, there were many pagan gods and goddesses in Egypt). So, Moses asked God, “What will I say to Israel when they ask me what is Your name?” God’s reply to Moses was, “I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you” (Exodus 3:14 KJV).

Over 1500 years after Moses’ experiences seeing God in person, we leap ahead to Christ’s earthly ministry. In John chapter 8, Jesus is confronted with the Jewish religious leaders, and they accuse Jesus of being possessed of a devil (evil spirit). The unbelieving Jews mock Jesus, after He claims to have seen and known Abraham. John 8:58 KJV is the highlight of the passage: “Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I AM.” The Lord Jesus claimed to be the “I AM” in the burning bush at Mount Sinai! The wicked Jews in their unbelief stood aghast, and they attempted to stone Christ, before He left them.

Jesus was not just a common man, He is the Creator God manifested in the flesh. He is the “LORD God” and “JEHOVAH” of the Old Testament.

  • Jesus Christ is “the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe” (1 Timothy 4:10) and the only way to heaven (Acts 4:12).
  • Jesus Christ is the only mediator between God and men (1 Timothy 2:5).
  • Jesus Christ is the “way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by [him]” (John 14:6).
  • Jesus Christ is the “bread of life” (John 6:48).
  • Jesus Christ is “Wonderful, Counselor, the mighty God, the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6).
  • Jesus Christ is “the King of kings, and the Lord of lords” (Revelation 19:16), “the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords” (1 Timothy 6:15).
  • Jesus Christ is “the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End” (Revelation 21:6; cf. Revelation 1:8,11,17).
  • Jesus Christ is the Son of Man, and Jesus Christ is the Son of God (Matthew 12:8; Matthew 14:33).
  • Jesus Christ is the “great God and our Saviour” (Titus 2:13).
  • Jesus Christ is the “Holy One of Israel” (Isaiah 47:4).
  • Jesus Christ is the “Lamb of God” (John 1:29).
  • Jesus Christ is the ONLY foundation of the true Christian church (1 Corinthians 3:11).
  • Jesus Christ is “the rock, the fortress, the deliverer, the God, the strength, the buckler [Shield], the horn of salvation, and the strong tower to those that trust in Him” (Psalm 18:2).
  • Jesus Christ is the Head of the Church, which is His Body (Ephesians 1:22,23).

Wow, Christians serve an awesome God… the Lord Jesus Christ! Jesus of Nazareth and the Creator God from eternity past are one in the same! Certainly it is beyond us, but we had better believe the Bible!

Jesus Christ… He is the I AM.

Love for You on Calvary

February 11, 2007

by Shawn Brasseaux
2011 Update

Valentine’s Day is a time when people show their love toward one another. The day is filled with flowers, hugs, kisses (both the physical type and the chocolates, lol), and other intimate activities. People celebrate February 14 a day where acts of love are shown toward significant others, friends, and so on. Sadly, very seldom is this affection is ever directed to heaven. On this day of love, most people just forget God altogether—just like the other 364 days. They care not to remember Him because of guilt and sin, or they are so wrapped up in this secular society that they just forget the sacrifice that He gave for them. In this Bible study, we want to show you God’s love for you on Calvary.

How it grieves God to see His creation just ignore Him…. After everything He has done, and they are still ungrateful souls. There is the Creator, dwelling in heaven, tears filling His eyes as He observes the undeserving and selfish ways of humanity. Satan stands at the throne of God, chuckling and grinning. The creatures that are supposed to bring glory and honor to the Lord Jesus Christ are those which are doing everything but. Oh, how sad!

Why is it ironic that people forget God on Valentine’s Day? The answer can be found in the Bible, in 1 John 4:7-10 KJV:

“7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.
8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.
10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation [fully-satisfying payment] for our sins.”

Not only is God’s nature love, not only is His plan for us filled with love, GOD IS LOVE. His very being is love, yet very few remember God on February 14. Everything He does is done out of love. The nature of the three Persons of the Godhead is to live for one another—God the Father lives for God the Son and God the Holy Spirit, God the Son lives for God the Father and God the Holy Spirit, and the Holy Spirit lives for God the Father and God the Son.

God is the only source of true, unfailing, infinite, genuine love. God’s love is a love that surpasses all: it cannot be matched or measured, and it always remains the same. It was His abounding love for us—in addition to His grace and mercy—that prompted Him to go to Calvary to die on our behalf.

“We [Christians] love Him [God], because he first loved us” (1 John 4:19 KJV). God knew that sinful humanity was doomed to hell, but it was His love, His grace, and His mercy that sent Him to the cross for us. He knew most of humanity would be ungrateful and scoff at Him, despite His ultimate sacrifice. He knew that He would suffer greatly and would die the worst death ever conceived by the human mind, but His love was so great, so intense, and so abounding that He went through with it—all of the way.

Let us consider Romans 5:6-11 KJV:

“6 For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.
7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die.

8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.

10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.

11 And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.”

Jesus Christ even loved those Roman soldiers who nailed Him to the cross! Prior to His physical death, Jesus Christ hung there thinking of us—He was thinking of you! His final thoughts were “I have accomplished their salvation.” He declared from Calvary’s cross, “It is finished” (John 19:30). Then He bowed His head and gave up His Spirit to His heavenly Father. In that instant His loving heart beat for the last time and stopped. The Creator gave His life for His creation! Furthermore, He is alive evermore, willing to become your Saviour if you would trust in what He did for you!

Read Paul’s Gospel of Grace, as found in 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 KJV:

“1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.
3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:”

Why not trust in Christ Jesus alone as your personal Saviour today? Why not have your sins forgiven? Why not be made right with God today? Why not receive salvation from your sins? Why not trust in the Lord’s finished crosswork on Calvary. We can find abounding Person of Jesus Christ. “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13). Hung and slain between two thieves, the innocent Saviour, the intelligent Creator, and the omnipotent God of the universe showed His love for you on Calvary….

The Authority of the King James Bible

January 23, 2007

by Shawn Brasseaux
2008 Update

Ever since the Bible was completed in the first century A.D., Satan has viciously attacked it. He has attempted to water it down, to burn it, to discredit it, and to ultimately destroy it. After all, the Bible is God’s Word, and it stands against everything deceptive and wicked/sinful (the very things that Satan promotes). In this Bible study, let us take the time to appreciate the authority of the King James Bible!

Today, there are multitudes of people claiming that there are “missing books” that belong in the Bible. The recent discovery of the “Gospel of Judas” has generated much confusion as to whether Judas deliberately betrayed Jesus Christ. Do “the Gospel of Mary Magdalene,” “the Gospel of Judas,” and “the Gospel of Thomas” really belong in the Bible? Did Mary Magdalene and Judas—of all people—really write Scripture? Could the Bible really be incomplete as much of Christendom wants us to believe? For those of us who have the indwelling Holy Spirit, we are not gullible: we know the truth, and we will make it known!

God the Holy Spirit is the author of the Bible. “Holy men of God” were moved by the Holy Spirit to record the Bible into written human language (2 Timothy 3:15-17; 2 Peter 1:20,21). [Notice that every book of the Bible was written by a man who was moved by the Holy Spirit, making no reference to women such as Mary Magdalene writing anything.] Remember, the Bible is not a book of men’s ideas; the Bible is the very mind of God, and God entrusted His Word to mankind.

Originally, God caused His Word to be penned in Aramaic and Hebrew (Old Testament); the New Testament was written in Koine Greek. The entire Bible was written over a period of some 1,500 years, and God used 40 authors to write down His Word. If God could have framed the worlds from nothing by His spoken Word, surely He could perfectly preserve His Word for us to read over 2,000 years after its completion (Hebrews 11:3).

God had His Word written down (inspiration), and He is preserving it even to this day, and He has had it translated even to this present day. Even today, God is overseeing His Word remains intact and that it is being spread via the languages of the world.

In fact, God promised that He would preserve His Word forever. Consider Psalm 12:6,7 KJV: The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. Thou shalt keep them, O LORD, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever.” Psalm 119:89 KJV says: “For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven.” Our Lord Jesus claimed, “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away(Matthew 24:35; Mark 13:31; Luke 21:33).

Although God has preserved His Word, you can be sure that the devil has created his own false versions of the Bible to deceive people (see 2 Thessalonians 2:2). Today, we have over 100 English translations all claiming to be “God’s Word,” and yet none of them agree with one another—over 200 if we consider the partial translations! The King James Bible and modern English Bibles come from two separate Greek source texts. The underlying Greek for the King James Bible, the Antiochian text (the Majority Text), is the text that early Christians accepted as God’s Word: “And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch” (Acts 11:26). The Majority Text (Textus Receptus) is the greatest number of surviving Greek New Testament manuscripts that agree with one another. They are from Antioch, Syria.

Let me say that it does matter which Bible version you use. The NIV, NASB, NKJV footnotes, NRSV, ESV, GNB/TEV, et cetera are based on a few corrupted manuscripts that disagree with the Majority Text. The King James Bible and modern English versions have two separate Greek sources; hence, they each read vastly different and disagree with each other. If you have an Authorized Version King James Bible, you have God’s Word preserved for you in English! Praise the Lord He kept His promise of preservation!

The Bible is very reliable because it alone is God’s Word. It alone is infallible and inerrant. It is superior to the Quran, the Book of Mormon, the writings of Confucius, and all other religious texts. Read 2 Timothy 3:16,17 KJV: “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.”

Hebrews 4:12 KJV says: “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”  “Quick” (living) and “powerful” refer to the fact that the Bible is not just an “old book” as the scoffers claim. The Bible alone contains God’s truth and wisdom—it alone has the power to judge what the heart “thinks” and does. The Bible alone contains the power of God, and it alone will last forever.

Jesus Christ told God His Father in John 17:17 KJV: “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.” God’s Word is God’s truth—God cannot lie (Titus 1:2). Why must we take a firm stance against the idea that there could possibly be more books that need to be added to the Bible? People would then be allowed to interject their own interpretations and philosophies in genuine Scripture, tainting the Word of God with deception and misleading the masses. People would be claiming multiple “plans of salvation,” apart from Jesus Christ and His finished work on Calvary.

Churches could then place their denominational doctrine right alongside the God-breathed Scripture, promoting heretical, blasphemous ideas that the righteous God would never support. Mark 4:19 shows us that evil chokes God’s Word, so that it cannot lead lost people to a knowledge of salvation and a clear understanding of what God has to say to them regarding salvation (2 Corinthians 4:3,4). Revelation 20:18,19 gives a clear, definite warning to anyone who chooses to add to the Bible, or take away from it (cf. Deuteronomy 4:1,2).

Those people who do not like what the Bible says are guilty of altering the Bible so it fits their opinions. This is what the Bible calls, “handling the word of God deceitfully(2 Corinthians 4:2). The Bible says, Many corrupt the word of God” (2 Corinthians 2:17). It is only because of God’s grace that He has not retaliated in righteous anger and judgment… yet. Hundreds of years ago, the Roman Catholic Church was guilty of trying to insert what we now call “apocryphal” books into the Bible—false books that are not God’s Word.

Even to this day, there are more people who are trying to convince Bible believers and the rest of the world that there are other books missing from the Bible, and that the King Bible is not infallible (errorless)—attacking the “archaic” King James helps them sell their “improved” modern Bibles! I would hate to be in the shoes of those who deliberately corrupted the Bible, and those who are still trying to question its superiority in judging all spiritual matters. Anyone who alters God’s Word does so to his or her own detriment!

God is perfect, so why would His book be imperfect? Why would God create perfect original manuscripts, only to have them disappear forever? That makes no sense. God obviously preserved those perfect words, so that we can have them today. We have them in the King James Bible!

How could the God who synchronized the most minute and delicate movements of the planets manage to make a mistake in His Word? God’s Word is perfect, with 66 books, Genesis through Revelation. Nothing is missing; nothing needs to be added. Never are we to add to God’s Word, because that is a sin. In fact, when we add to the truth, we become liars: “Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him. Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar” (Proverbs 30:6). God’s Word, preserved in the King James Bible in English, is perfect as is. It has no mistakes whatsoever. You can trust it, like so many Christians have done these past 400 years.

Let us never forget:

“23 … the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.
24 For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away:
25 But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.”
(1 Peter 1:23-25 KJV).

“7 The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: because the spirit of the LORD bloweth upon it: surely the people is grass.
8 The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.”
(Isaiah 40:7,8 KJV).

The Sojourner, the Temporal, and the Eternal

January 5, 2007

by Shawn Brasseaux

I am only flesh and blood and I cannot live forever in this mortal body. God has blessed me with over 18 years, and earth has been my home for almost two decades. One day, this very environment in which we all live will melt away. The house I lived in for all of my life will pass. The schools I went to and the places I frequented will also pass away. All of my material possessions will be gone and will never exist again. God never intended for me to stay here on earth forever, I am a sojourner, and earth is merely the pit stop.

The book of Hebrews refers to believers as “strangers and pilgrims” on this earth (Hebrews 11:13). The Apostle Paul wrote to his Gentile converts in Ephesus: “And [God the Father] hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:” (Ephesians 2:6 KJV). The Bible says that we Christians do not belong to the world, we belong to the Lord! We belong in the heavenly places!

It is only human to become attached to material things in this world, but never forget that we Christians have so much more in store for us in heaven. Through the turmoil and heartache of everyday life, Christians are prone to forgetting Scriptural truth. God never said that our lives on earth would be “a bed of roses,” carefree and stress free. God has promised to bless us Christians with heavenly treasures that we cannot even begin to fathom using the human mind. Our physical bodies and our physical world are temporal, while our new resurrected bodies and our new heavenly home are eternal (2 Corinthians 4:18–5:1).

I tend to forget from time to time that the spiritual world is much better than my current home. The treasures and objects in God’s kingdom will last forever, while everything here will fade away. We should not be attached to the world. “If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, and not ony things on the earth” (Colossians 3:1,2 KJV). While the Olympic runners of Paul’s day trained and ran to win a crown of shriveled leaves, we should be striving far greater, for we Christians have the opportunity to receive an eternal crown through our service as Christians (1 Corinthians 9:25).

I want to stay here on earth, but I also do not want to stay here. I want to stay because this life is all that I have ever known, but I want to go to heaven because it is where I belong. In fact, the Apostle Paul was just as human and we are and he felt the same way. In Philippians 1:21-24 KJV, the Apostle Paul wrote:

“21 For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.
22 But if I live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labour: yet what I shall choose I wot not.
23 For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better:
24 Nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful for you.”

The Apostle Paul confessed that he wanted to be with Christ in heaven (which is “far better”), but he would stay in this physical body so that he could further help his Gentile believers in their walk with the Lord. Sure, there is no death, no pain, no sadness, no sickness, and no sin in heaven, but there are still some lost souls here on earth who need us to give them the Gospel of Grace. They need a Christian to share God’s Word with them.

If I am on earth, I am still vulnerable to Satan’s attacks, but this is not the case in heaven. By the same token, once a person becomes saved by believing and trusting in the Gospel of 1 Corinthians 15:1-4, the Lord does not immediately take the person to heaven. God leaves the Christians here on earth, to evangelize and bring others to a knowledge of salvation. We are saved to serve the Lord; we are not saved to sit! Until He returns, we should be willing to do His work (which is what very few Christians are willing to do these days).

Heaven will be so awesome that you will not even have the slightest urge to return to earth. Our mindset will be completely different in eternity. Believers will not wish to return to this present violent and wicked world, because our present world will one day be destroyed. We will have a new heaven and new earth, and we will not want to leave that glorious, incorruptible environment.

One day, this very environment in which we all live will melt away. The house I lived in for all of my life will pass. The schools I went to and the places I frequented will also pass away. All of my material possessions will be gone and will never exist again. God never intended for me to stay here on earth forever, I am a sojourner, and earth is the pit stop. One day, the trumpet will sound, I will finish my course, and I will go home…. to live in a home “eternal in the heavens” (2 Corinthians 5:1).

“While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal (2 Corinthians 4:18 KJV).

Sex and the Bible

October 20, 2006

by Shawn Brasseaux

Sex is a very sensitive topic, even for some Christians. For 6,000 years now, our world has abused sexual intercourse. Sex in and of itself is not dirty because the Lord created it to be the consummation of the marriage of the husband and his wife.

Describing the marriage relationship, Genesis 2:24 says: “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.” God describes sexual intercourse as when “they [a husband and his wife] shall be one flesh.” In the King James Bible, sex is referred to as a man “knowing” a woman (Genesis 4:1; Genesis 4:17; Genesis 4:25; et al.).

The Bible gives us great detail about sexual intercourse (especially in the Old Testament book Song of Solomon). Remember, God’s Word is God’s Word, and there is nothing dirty about it. Mankind has made sex into something filthy, horrible, and ungodly. It neither sinful nor abnormal to look at a member of the opposite sex and show interest. The problem arises when we lust, or continually dwell on the mental picture that we have of that particular person. When we look upon someone besides our spouse, our minds begin to wander into “sexual fantasizing,” and this is when it becomes sin. But, most of our world has no idea of what sin even is anymore!

As a man, I can tell you that all men are “turned on” visually. This is the way God made us men. While the man should have self-control, some women do dress provocatively and this, not surprisingly, appeals to men. Ever wonder why men are more prone to be obsessed with pornography than women? I find it strange that a woman who is wearing almost nothing grows upset or gets defensive when a man stares at her. “Lady, put on some clothes, and maybe he will not be staring at you anymore!”

There have been many times where I have overheard people publicly discussing their sex lives. There is no shame or modesty. Does anyone have any sense of decency these days?

GOD’S FOUR STIPULATIONS FOR SEXUAL RELATIONS

God has set four strict limits on sexual relations, which He has never rescinded:

  1. No sexual relations outside of marriage—this includes extramarital sex and premarital sex (Proverbs 5:15-20). As the Bible says, “Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge” (Hebrews 13:4).
  2. No sexual relations between humans and animals (Leviticus 18:23; Deuteronomy 21:21).
  3. No homosexual relations (Leviticus 18:21; Romans 1:26,27; 1 Timothy 1:9,10).
  4. No cross-dressing—no women dressing (or acting) like men and no men dressing (or acting) like women (Deuteronomy 22:5; 1 Corinthians 5:9-10).

In the Old Testament, for example, the LORD commanded that if a man had sexual relations with a married woman, both the man and the woman were to be stoned to death (Deuteronomy 22:22-24). While we are not under Israel’s strict Mosaic Law, God has never rescinded His attitude against sexual sins like fornication, adultery, and homosexuality. Lest anyone contend that God’s attitude toward sexual sins has changed because we are no longer under the Mosaic Law, let us pay special attention to what the Apostle Paul writes to us under grace in the Dispensation of Grace.

For example, look at Romans chapter 1. Notice when God “gave [the nations] up” in Genesis chapter 11, and set Abraham and his seed (Israel) apart from the common lineage of mankind, to what did God give the nations up? The Apostle Paul in Romans chapter 1 tells us:

“24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:
25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:
27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.
28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;
29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,
30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,
31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:
32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.”

We can see direct references to all types of sin, but especially homosexuality (verses 24-27) and fornication (verse 29). Notice verse 32: “they which commit such things [all the sins listed in verses 25-31] are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.” Even in the Dispensation of Grace, God’s attitude toward sexual sins has not changed. God still hates fornication, adultery, homosexuality, premarital sex, and so on.

Notice in 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 Paul writes that some of the believers in Corinth were once “fornicators, idolaters, adulterers, effeminate [perverts and men who behaved like women], … abusers of themselves with mankind.” “And such were some of you,” Paul says. The Corinthians were different people now that they were saved! Notice again, “fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.” Evidently, these are still sins, even in the Dispensation of Grace.

In Galatians 5:19, the Bible speaks of “the works of the flesh,” or the works of our sin nature: “Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,….” These are all sexual sins. Notice, the Bible still calls them evil, even though we are in the Dispensation of Grace and not under the Mosaic Law. The Bible speaks of “them that defile themselves with mankind” because it is still sin, no matter what dispensation (1 Timothy 1:9,10).

Are you struggling with masturbation, pornography, or prostitution? There is hope at the cross of Calvary. While sexual sins are sins, the blood of Jesus Christ has paid for them. No matter how wicked a sin is, the Lord Jesus Christ has forgiven it. “Where sin abounded, grace did much more abound” (Romans 5:20). Jesus Christ died to pay for all your sins, every sin you have ever committed or will ever commit. God loves you, and He has forgiven you in His Son Jesus Christ! Why not trust in the Lord Jesus Christ to save you?

Young people who remain sexually pure (virgins) before marriage are often ridiculed. Someone who has not had premarital sex is called a “wimp.” But, it would be in our best interests if we believed the wisdom of God’s Word. We can never go wrong when we let God’s Word be the final authority instead of world’s standards of right and wrong.

God designed sexual intercourse to function solely within the marriage relationship between a man and his wife. This is why God instructs us to not to engage in sexual relations outside of the marriage relationship. It took science quite a long time to figure out what God tried to warn us about thousands of years ago in Scripture. Now, with increased medical knowledge, sexually transmitted diseases are all too well known.

God made sex, and He made it “very good.” As long as sexual intercourse is practiced between a man and his wife, sexual intercourse is not a sin, and it honors God!

Sex and the Bible II
Shawn Brasseaux

[9 February 2008]

We live in a sexually immoral society. You can tune your radio to hear ungodly sexual remarks. Yet, society would beg to differ and argue, “Everyone else is doing it, so it must be okay.” Turn on your TV, and you can quite an eyeful, as during commercials or perhaps at a (recent) Super Bowl. Even the internet and libraries all around the world have pornographic images and sexually-explicit literature. For the sake of money, these items are sold, and countless souls are trapped in a lifestyle of sexual sin! Some women in poverty have simply given up, defiled their bodies, and walk the dangerous streets of our world to make an income. Some men even encourage it. Oh, how sad!

How can God bear the grief? These people need the Lord Jesus Christ, and He is more than willing to help them. He could clean up their lives, and make them “trophies of His grace.” All they have to do is trust in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation, and God will save them forever!

In early 2007, during my freshman year in college, I had a professor who would dress in lewd/vulgar clothing. She would only talk to us about sex and her language was horrible. Last summer, a friend going to another college told me how his biology professor was always making crude, “humorous” jokes about sex. Even in “educated circles,” this type of foolishness prevails.

Quite a few months ago, one of my friends asked me if I was a virgin. He told me that he had sex before, and wanted to know if I had it. I told my friend that I chose to remain pure until marriage, and even though it is difficult at times to keep that promise, I know God will help me keep it. I told him that I respect my wife (even though I know not her identity yet), and I respect her enough to wait until marriage. I know of several other people who are struggling with sexual immorality, and how I pray for those people that they get saved!

If you are a young person, I encourage you to remain sexually pure until marriage. Respect your body, respect the body of your spouse, respect yourself, and respect your spouse. With all the sexual temptations in this world, it is mightily hard to remain sexually pure. But with the help of the Lord Jesus Christ, I know that I can—and hopefully will—remain pure until marriage. Every human, except the Lord Jesus Christ, is born with a sin nature. We naturally rebel against God. God says one thing, we do the opposite every single time. I am just as capable of being caught within a sexually immoral act as anyone else is.

The Bible term for sexual intercourse is a husband “knowing” his wife (Genesis 4:1, 17, 25; et al.). In the Bible, God speaks of “a husband and wife not depriving each other” (1 Corinthians 7:3-5). Job 31:1 says, “I made a covenant with my eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?” Jesus Christ, also referring to lust, said in Matthew 5:27-28: “Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.”

As long as sexual relations are confined within the marriage relationship, God does not find it the least bit filthy! The Song of Solomon graphically describes relations that occur between a husband and his wife. Unfortunately, sex has been given a bad reputation, and that can be attributed to none other than Satan. The devil has defiled something God made righteous and holy, and he has turned it into something evil and disrespectful.

In fact, did you know that the first recorded act of homosexuality can be found in the Bible? There is an indication in Genesis 9:20-25 that Ham raped his father Noah, which is why Noah cursed Canaan, Ham’s son.

Our society has come quite a long ways from the ancient days of the Old Testament, but humanity’s ways have remained static, and so have God’s laws. Nothing has changed. God wants us to obey Him and His attitude toward sin has never changed, and we still want to rebel as always.

CONCLUSION

Sexual intercourse honors God as long as it is between a man and his wife—sexual acts outside of marriage (fornication and adultery) are sin. Sadly, sex sells these days, literally and metaphorically, and sexual sins are very popular for the sake of generating money!

Now that I am nearly done with my teenage years, I can tell you that it is quite normal to feel the occasion “urge” for sex. It is normal to look at a member of the opposite sex and think “wow” before you temporarily go insane. We cannot help but glance at the opposite sex, which is something beautiful. But, respect your body, and have respect for your future spouse, and remain pure until marriage.

Take one quick look at a member of the opposite sex and then turn away, or you will lust after the person and commit sin in your heart (it is this thought that will bring about actual sexual intercourse!). Remain sexually pure until marriage, which is something you will proud of once you are married. You will be glad that you waited all those years! That is a promise!

Halloween 2006 – The Satanic Nature of “Harmless” Halloween

October 19, 2006

by Shawn Brasseaux

It is that time of year again—when Satan is honored and when God is disgraced! For centuries, people have celebrated Halloween. When one thinks of Halloween, he or she usually thinks about well-meaning children dressed in costumes collecting treats. It seems like an innocent holiday, but the 31st of October is actually the most Satanic of all “holidays.” We fail to realize that this holiday has evil roots, yet people continue to celebrate it as something harmless and fun.

HALLOWEEN: YESTERDAY AND TODAY

Early Halloween celebrations can be traced back to the Druids (Celts), who lived some 2,000 years ago in modern-day England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. On the night of October 31, Celts worshipped their false gods and sacrificed animals and humans. One of their gods was Samhain, or the lord of death (thus, Halloween is also known as “Samhain”).

On this night, Druids would travel throughout the countryside going door-to-door and collecting offerings for sacrifices. If a household could not afford to give an offering, this would result in the castration of a male family member or of a prized male animal. Around 1848-1849, millions migrated to escape the Great Potato Famine, and these immigrants from Europe brought their pagan festival to our nation (American). Eventually, Halloween was “Christianized” by the pope and now people no longer recognize the link between Halloween and Satanism.

Today’s version of Halloween—a condensation of “All (Hallow)’s (E)v(en)”—seems like a game; people say it is just for fun, so it cannot be harmful. God clearly does not see Halloween as a game: it is sin because it downgrades the worship of Satan and evil.

In modern Satanism, October 31st is the night when Satan fellowships with his followers. Real witches use this night to talk to the dead, and offer sacrifices to their false gods (including their god Satan). Occults use the holiday of Halloween to commit their heinous acts, but Halloween’s evil traditions have been masked by Satan. He has used “All Saints’ Day” (on November 1) to coincide a Satanic event with a holiday related to some churches. This is why people no longer recognize Halloween as being Satanic. Religion makes Halloween look so innocent!!!

HALLOWEEN ELEMENTS AND MEANINGS

How did costumes become associated with Halloween? The Druids dressed up in costumes so that the evil spirits would not recognize them. Trick-or-treating developed from the fact that the Druids went from house to house, collecting everything from food to money (the treats). If a household refused to provide gifts, or could not afford to give something, the house would be burned and the men would be castrated (this was the trick!).

What about the jack-o’-lantern? The jack-o’-lantern (more common here in the United States than the turnips used elsewhere) is an ancient symbol of condemned souls. Supposedly, a man named Jack tricked Satan. Neither heaven nor hell would take Jack, so his soul is forced to roam earth with a lantern in hand. The jack-o’-lantern is used to ward off evil spirits—but it actually attracts them! And the black cats? Black cats are believed to be humans who were damned and transformed into cats. Some thought black cats as witches or spirits in disguise. What about the apple bobbing? Bobbing for apples is related to the Roman goddess of fruit trees who was symbolized by the apple. Halloween is nothing but a mish-mash of pagan and superstitious elements!

THE BIBLE’S POSITION ON HALLOWEEN

Although the Bible does not mention the word “Halloween,” the Bible does advise us that we should not participate in the events for which Halloween is known (that is, Satan worship).

God forbade the Jews from worshipping pagan gods and/or evil spirits (Exodus 20:3). God commanded, in the Old Testament, that witches be put to death (Exodus 22:18). Leviticus 19:31, Leviticus 20:6, and Deuteronomy 18:10-14 show us that God despises sorcery, wizardry, and fortune telling (called “divination”). Christianity and the occult are not compatible (Acts 8:9-24). In Acts 19:19, after pagans received salvation through Jesus Christ, they came and burned their “curious arts” (witchcraft) books.

God tells that we should “cast off the works of darkness, and put on the armour of light” (Romans 13:12). How does Halloween even honor God? It does not. Does honoring God’s enemy (Satan) honor God? Nope. Would you see Jesus dressed up in a costume trick-or-treating in your neighborhood? I do not think so! (Unless of course, it was the “Jesus” of religion of 2 Corinthians 11:3,4!!)

Halloween has a dark side, and we need to realize that it is not a fun time for kids to eat candy! We are telling kids that “mingling with darkness” is “fun.” Satan can have his fun on October 31, but he has an even better time waiting for him in the eternal future—the lake of fire! I like to think of Halloween as the “day of assessment.” It is on October 31 that we truly see who merely claims to follow the Bible versus who actually follows the Bible. Many claim to “love the Lord,” and yet they participate in activities that Christians should have no part. Bring not reproach to our Saviour’s name—avoid Halloween. It is it not Christian at all.

The Remnant of Genuine Believers

October 18, 2006

by Shawn Brasseaux

Have you ever wondered how many people will be in heaven? Will everyone be there? There are many arguments such as “all roads lead to heaven” and “all religions lead to the same God,” so everyone will eventually get to heaven, right? This idea, known as universalism, is a devil’s lie! How blasphemous and disrespectful it is to say that there are other ways besides going through Jesus Christ.

Even though we cannot produce an actual value, we can assuredly infer from Scripture that there have not been—and never will be—many souls in heaven. Throughout human history, God has always had a small, small, small number of followers because the majority of people living in the Old Testament and New Testament were pagan idolaters. They had no real knowledge of the one true living God, JEHOVAH. Even though we in the 21st century have increased communication, most of society is just as ignorant of JEHOVAH today as people in the Bible who lived thousands of years ago!

Make special note that Old Testament believers are not called “Christians.” Believers were first called “Christians” in Antioch, and they were saved by the Gospel of Grace preached first by the Apostle Paul, according to Acts 11:26.

  • 2350 B.C. – Noah and his family were the only true believers, so they were the only survivors of the global flood (Genesis 7:13). At the time of Noah (2350 B.C.), there were only eight believers in the whole then-known world, making millions to a few billion people lost and hell-bound (2 Peter 2:5)!
  • 2175 B.C. – Right after the flood, the whole then-known world is assembled at the tower of Babel in pagan worship. While the Bible does not give us the number of believers at this time, we understand there were not many (see Genesis 11:1-9).
  • 2100 B.C. – Just prior to Abram (Abraham) being saved, we find that his father’s household is pagan. Joshua 24:2 says: “And Joshua said unto all the people [Israel], Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Your fathers dwelt on the other side of the flood in old time, even Terah, the father of Abraham, and the father of Nachor: and they served other gods.” The number of believers in the world was so minute that there were almost no believers! (Noah could have been alive at this time, based on the fact that Noah lived 350 years after the flood; Genesis 9:29. However, it seems as though Noah lost his testimony a short time after the flood.)
  • 900 B.C. – Another instance of God having a remnant of believers is found in 1 Kings 19:18. Elijah thought he was the last remaining believer in JEHOVAH, but the Lord told him: “Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him” (cf. Romans 11:4). There were only 7,000 Jews who had not worshipped Baal, a pagan god.
  • 700 B.C. – Isaiah 1:9 says that God had only a “very small remnant” of believers in Israel. How many? Not many!
  • Circa A.D. 27 – Jesus Christ Himself told us in Matthew 7:13,14 that “wide is the gate, and broad [wide] is the way that leadeth to destruction, and many go thereat: because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.” Jesus knew that few would go to heaven, and many would choose to go to hell. Notice the issue of free will—God did not choose them to go to heaven or hell, they went there willingly!
  • Circa A.D. 30 – After Christ’s ascension, the eleven apostles are searching for a man to take Judas’s place. Just before the Day of Pentecost, how many believing Jews were still following the apostles in Jerusalem? About 120! There were only 120 believers in Jerusalem after three years of Christ’s ministry (Acts 1:15), and the twelfth apostle (Matthias) was chosen from that group of 120. Although this group of Jewish believers grew to at least 8,000 according to Acts 2:41 and Acts 4:4, this is still a rather small percentage of the whole nation Israel. It is estimated that there could have been 250 million people in the whole then-known world.
  • Circa A.D. 55 – The Apostle Paul writes that he knows that he will only be able to lead “some” people to salvation (Romans 11:14; 1 Corinthians 9:22). Paul knew that not many would care to have a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ, and that he would not save “most” or that he would save “all.” There would only be “some” who would be saved. Only a few would place their faith in the Gospel of Grace.

There are approximately 6.8 billion people in the world, and over two billion claim to be “Christian.” I highly doubt that there are two billion Christians in the world today. How could one-third of the whole world be “Christian,” when the Bible was very clear that there have never been many believers? Perhaps there are millions of Christians today, but certainly not billions. Why? Because half of those two billion “Christians” do not even have assurance of salvation in Jesus Christ! They identify with a “paganized” form of Christianity (Christendom), a works-religion that emphasizes man’s performance and ignores the finished crosswork of Jesus Christ.

There are many professing Christians who actually rely on books and teachings that actually contradict the Bible! Many professing Christians are “religious,” trying to merit favor with God by doing something in their own strength. This is not true Christianity, so these people are not true Biblical Christians. Christians are not called to merit God’s favor by adhering to religious commandments; we are hell-bound sinners, and the only way we can be reconciled to God is if God does something on our behalf. This is why Jesus Christ died for our sins!

Christians are called to believe the Bible “rightly divided” and completely trust in it alone (2 Timothy 2:15). Christians are defined by their trust in the Lord Jesus Christ and their belief in God’s Word. Doing good works, going to church, praying daily, getting water baptized, giving money to charity, and acknowledging that God exists does not necessarily make a person a Bible-believing saint of the most High God. Only if they have trusted in Christ Jesus alone as Saviour are they Christians.

God wants everyone to go to heaven, which is why the Lord Jesus Christ died to redeem us from our sins. “But God commended his love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). “God is not willing that any should perish [go to hell], but that all should come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9)!

Our Lord Jesus Christ has already paved the road to heaven—too bad most people are too blind to see it. Everyone will be presented with the Truth of Scripture at least one time, and they will each have at least one opportunity to take God at His Word (having faith in God’s Word and believing and trusting the Gospel of Grace found in 1 Corinthians 15:1-4). Usually, people are too prideful, too self-righteous, and too religious to simply accept God’s offer. Either they want to do something to provide their own salvation, or they want absolutely nothing to do with God. How sad.

This time, the road less traveled is the one that should be most treasured…by the remnant of genuine believers….

THE GOSPEL OF GRACE (1 Corinthians 15:1-4 KJV)

“1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.
3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:”
