The Spirit-Filled Mother

by Shawn Brasseaux

Do you know what a “Spirit-filled mother” is? Remember, when the Bible speaks of being “filled with the Spirit,” it does not refer to instances of sudden emotional highs or loss of self-control. The Spirit-filled mother is a mother who is a member of the Church the Body of Christ. This type of mother is one that is submissive to the Holy Spirit working within her—notice the capital “S” on “Spirit-filled.” Once she grasps a firm understanding of what the Lord has called her to be, she can place her faith in that, and let God’s Word “work effectually” in her.

According to Titus 2:3-5 KJV, the Spirit-filled mother will do the same thing that aged women do in the local church. She will…

  • Lead a life that “becometh holiness”—notice the word “becometh”: her testimony will take time to grow, and she will make mistakes, but her actions will better reflect sound doctrine as time passes.
  • Not gossip or lie in order to attack the reputations of others.
  • Not be a drunkard, nor does she allow herself to be controlled by things that will affect the soundness of her mind.
  • Will teach her children “good things,” “good” being sound doctrine from God’s Word, as opposed to the world’s standard of “good.”
  • Will teach her daughters to keep a sound/clear mind, to love their own husbands and their children, to be “discreet” (cautious, separate, responsible), to be “chaste” (not lewd/vulgar in apparel and actions), to be “keepers at home” (her main responsibilities are at home), to be “good” (acceptable to God), and to be “obedient to their own husbands” (acknowledging the husband is the head of the household).

Why should Christian mothers do this—does it really matter? Yes, it does matter!! Titus 2:5 KJV ends with “…that the word of God be not blasphemed.” If the Christian mother is doing her best to fulfill her God-given duties (as listed above), the unbelieving world will not be able to speak evil of her lifestyle. She claims to be a Christian, and her actions prove it. She will not be giving the Lord a bad name; rather, He will be receiving the glory and honor. The Spirit-filled mother will train her children, especially her daughters, in the ways of the Lord. The daughters, when grown and married, will continue the cycle and teach their own daughters what their mother taught them.

You may say, “This is all well and good, but no woman can live to such high standards.” To which I would respond, “You are correct. No woman can adequately live this life! The woman must allow Christ to live His life in her! Only Christ can lead the sinless life.” If we would just listen to the Lord, our lives would be so much better off. If you are a young woman, consider what the Lord says about motherhood. What better advice can you get!

In closing, let me say that the Lord has blessed me with a Spirit-filled mother. Sure, she made mistakes, but she led me to the Lord when I was a small child. I learned basic Bible doctrine from her all those years ago, too. As my own mom understands, God is not looking for a sinless mother…He is just looking for a Spirit-filled mother!

“[The virtuous woman] looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her” (Proverbs 31:27-28 KJV).
