Christmas 2009 – When the Fulness of the Time Was Come

December 19, 2009

by Shawn Brasseaux

When people think of Christmastime, they casually think of the Baby Jesus in the manger. Others think of Santa Claus bringing presents to the good people and leaving lumps of coal for the wicked. These unscriptural impressions of Christmas are the result of 2,000 years of phony religious tradition and paganism. The majority of people (and even most professing Christians) have not been taught correctly regarding Christmastime. It is my earnest desire to help you better understand that first Christmas. Now, we look at the Bible, God’s preserved, inerrant, infallible Word, and I am sure that afterward, you will never look at Christmas the same again….

Using the Old Testament and Luke 1:5, we can determine that Mary gave birth to Jesus Christ in Bethlehem in early autumn. That is to say, Christ’s birthday was somewhere between September 22 and October 3. This was the time in which He was laid in the manger, so where in the world do we get December 25? Think about it… what is the gestation period of a human; how long does a human baby usually stay in the mother’s womb? Nine months, which is exactly the time between late December and late September. What I want you to see is that late December (Christmastime) is the time during which Jesus Christ was conceived in Mary’s womb! Christmastime is not Christ’s birthday; December 22nd through December 25th is the approximate time of the conception of Christ in the womb of Mary (Luke 1:35).

Because the devil takes pleasure in mocking and counterfeiting everything righteous and holy that God promotes, he influenced the pagans to celebrate their superstitious sun god holiday in late December (the origin of the Yule log burning, Christmas trees, et cetera). This “paganization” of Christmas is simply Satan’s method of ridiculing and degrading the conception of our Lord Jesus Christ! Remember, do not let the devil sidetrack you with all that pagan, religious nonsense—stay focused on the Biblical things, because only God’s Word counts for eternity.

Also, we need to make a clarification, lest anyone misunderstand the conception of Christ. When we speak of the “conception” of Christ, this does not mean that our Lord Jesus Christ came into existence in Mary’s womb. In the case of Christ, His “conception” was actually His incarnation, when God the Son’s invisible Spirit took on a literal, physical, visible human body. Please be sure you do not confuse the issue like so many people have.

Look at Micah 5:2 KJV, which prophesied the birthplace of the Messiah some 700 years before it happened: “But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.”

Notice, this coming ruler in Israel is “from everlasting.” There is only One who has no origin and no beginning—God Himself! God the Son always existed in the form of a Spirit, along with God the Father and God the Holy Spirit (John 4:24; John 1:1-4, 14). In fact, Jesus Christ was the Creator God manifest in human form (Ephesians 3:9; Colossians 2:9). Jesus Christ was “God manifest in the flesh.”

Consider Isaiah 7:14 KJV, also written 700 years before the birth of Christ: “Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.” Now, see the prophecy fulfilled in Matthew 1:21-25. The birth of Christ was the only virgin birth of a human… ever! The Spirit of God the Son went into Mary’s womb via the Holy Spirit, and Mary produced the human body in which God the Son incarnate would dwell. Never are we to refer to Mary as “the Mother of God”—God always existed, Mary was simply the vessel God used to generate a human body in which God the Son’s Spirit would dwell (Mary was a descendent of King David, giving Christ the genetic link necessary to inherit the throne of David; Luke 3:31).

Now, in Galatians 4:4,5 KJV, the Apostle Paul describes God’s incarnation (becoming flesh), and how it applies to us in the Dispensation of Grace: “But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, to redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.”

The conception of the Baby Jesus was certainly no accident of nature—it was determined by God all those eons ago, long before the creation of our universe. According to Galatians 4:4, God planned His Son’s coming to the nanosecond! God designed our universe with one specific reason in mind. He would create creatures in His image, mankind, place them on one planet in a vast universe of billions of galaxies and trillions of stars, and He would come down and dwell with the human race on earth (that is “Immanuel,” “God with us”)!

God also knew that sin would come into creation and disrupt His perfect plan, but that would not deter Him from accomplishing His original purpose. God laid out and executed an extremely complex plan. The Lord Jesus Christ would be a man (for it was by one man, Adam, sin came into the world, and through one man, Jesus Christ, eternal life; Romans 5:12). Jesus Christ would be a Jew (in order to redeem Israel; Luke 1:68) and a descendant of King David (in order to be Israel’s King; Luke 1:32).

God also took into account the Jews rejecting and killing Him, but His death would simply bring about the redemption of the nation Israel, then the whole world could receive the redemption through Christ’s shed blood! What I want you to see is that God the Son was originally sent to the nation Israel, something even many professing Christians overlook (Isaiah 9:6-7; Matthew 15:24; John 4:22; Romans 15:8).

But, what makes the incarnation and conception of Jesus Christ so important to us, 2000 years later? Had God the Son never become a man, most of the Bible’s prophecy would have never been fulfilled. Israel would have no Messiah-King. Unless God, a Spirit, became flesh, He would have never had any blood to shed because spirits do not have blood.

We as Gentile members of the Body of Christ would have no Saviour. We would have no hope. We would still be dead in our trespasses and sins. We would have never been reconciled with God. Had Christ never became a man, He could never die (a spirit cannot die), then that means He could never be buried, and He could never resurrect! We as believers in Christ would be “of all men most miserable” (1 Corinthians 15:17-19). Everything in the Bible collapses without the incarnation of Christ in Mary’s womb!

Jeremiah 23:5,6 KJV perfectly prophesied the coming of God the Son, Israel’s Messiah-King:

“5 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.
6 In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.”

When God the Son became a man, the Old Testament promises long awaiting fulfillment were finally being accomplished. Israel’s Messiah, the Son of God, had become the Son of David, a Jew. Despite the intense satanic opposition, the Old Testament covenants were starting to be fulfilled! The everlasting kingdom of heaven would usher in eternal righteousness, peace, and joy (Daniel 2:44; Luke 1:33)—but something would happen that would postpone that kingdom for at least two millennia….

When Jesus Christ offered Israel their kingdom, they blatantly rejected Him in unbelief, and with the help of the Roman government, crucified Him. The good news is that even though Israel killed their Messiah, God raised Him from the dead, and He could still bring in that kingdom (Acts 2:22-36). With Israel persistently opposing God, and only a small remnant of Jewish believers willing to listen to God, God set the nation Israel aside. The Lord created “the thirteenth apostle,” Paul, and this one man would be God’s apostle to the non-Jewish, Gentile world (Romans 11:13; Romans 15:16; 2 Timothy 1:11).

The Bible promises that after the rapture and the seven-year Tribulation, Israel’s exiled King will return to earth as King of kings and Lord of lords. Israel will be restored and redeemed, finally accepting Jesus Christ as their King when He returns at His Second Coming. “When the fulness of time was come, God sent forth His Son”…the first time. When the fulness of time is come, God will send forth His Son, AGAIN, and this time, He will be bringing the kingdom that will be set up and last forever on earth!

MERRY CHRISTMAS from arC Ministries!
Remember, the conception of the Lord Jesus Christ is the reason for the season!

Is God Hiding His Face from You?

December 13, 2009

by Shawn Brasseaux

Are you going through a difficult time right now? The hospitalization of a loved one? The death of a friend? Financial problems? Poor health? You may have a professing Christian tell you the reason why you are having all those problems is because “God is hiding His face from you.” They may tell you that you have un-confessed sin, so now God judging you for it. Some people may mean well, but oftentimes this is spoken in a rude, judgmental tone. Religious tradition has once again confused the issue. In this Bible study, we hope to study God’s Word, God’s way, and dispel the misunderstandings.

If we look at verses like Psalm 88:14, Isaiah 45:15, or Isaiah 59:2, we find one common theme: God is hiding His face from “them,” and He cannot hear “their” prayers.

  • Psalm 88:14 KJV: “LORD, why castest thou off my soul? why hidest thou thy face from me?”
  • Psalm 45:15 KJV: “Verily thou art a God that hidest thyself, O God of Israel, the Saviour.”
  • Isaiah 59:2 KJV: “But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.”

But, before we apply these verses to us, we need to establish who is the “them.” According to Isaiah, God is hiding His face from Israel. The Jews are steeped in pagan idolatrous worship and they refuse to obey the LORD, so He has set them on probation. As long as they are rebellious, God will withhold the blessings and pour out the curses (Deuteronomy 8:19,20): “And it shall be, if thou do at all forget the LORD thy God, and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I testify against you this day that ye shall surely perish. As the nations which the LORD destroyeth before your face, so shall ye perish; because ye would not be obedient unto the voice of the LORD your God.” Whenever Israel decided to hearken unto the LORD, then He would bless them with wealth and prosperity (Deuteronomy 7:12-16). This is not the program God is operating today.

Psalm 22:1 can be misinterpreted to say that God forsakes the believer (this would be in clear contradiction to Hebrews 13:5). But, we learn that this verse in the book of Psalms is actually a prophetic quote referring to Christ’s crucifixion 1,000 years into the future! Because God the Father is holy (separate from sinners), and God the Son “became sin for us” (2 Corinthians 5:21), the Father had to turn His back on the Son as He hung on the cross (also see Galatians 3:13). This is why Jesus Christ shouted out, “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46 KJV). This verse in Psalm 22 has nothing to do with you and I as members of the Church the Body of Christ.

Some people will even go so far as to say that your suffering may be the result of you losing your salvation! They use Psalm 51:11 for that, which has nothing to do with us either. “Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.” In the Old Testament, there was no such thing as the Holy Spirit permanently indwelling the believer. King David wrote Psalm chapter 51 shortly after committing adultery with Bathsheba, and David was afraid that God would take His Holy Spirit from him.

As opposed to the nation Israel, we are in the Church the Body of Christ, and we are under a whole different set of circumstances. Now, in the Dispensation of Grace, Paul says that we as believers are sealed by and with the Holy Spirit of promise (Ephesians 1:13,14; Ephesians 4:30). The Holy Spirit will indwell the believer until the day of the rapture, the day of redemption! A person who is a genuine member of the Body of Christ will always be saved: the believer in Christ has eternal security.

So, what about unanswered prayer? What about your unhealed body? Why does James 5:15 not work for you? Why does John 14:14 not work for you? We know that God is not hiding His face from you, so there must be something else to consider. The problem is that we live in a sinful, fallen world. Romans 8:18-23 KJV says:

“18 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.
19 For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God.
20 For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope,
21 Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.
22 For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.
23 And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.”

“The whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.” The animal kingdom, the whole world, groans in pain—everything in creation is under the curse of sin and death. Even us Christians (verse 23)!

This curse on our universe is the result of Adam’s sin, as found back in Genesis chapter 3 (Romans 5:12). We do not grow sick because God hates us; disease and death are the results of the curse of corruption and sin. Our physical bodies are not yet redeemed, so they are prone to grow old and eventually return to the dust. You are not the only person in the world suffering (1 Corinthians 10:13): “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”

But, what are we to do when our prayers go unanswered? Romans 5:1-5, 2 Corinthians 12:7-10, and Philippians 4:6,7 give us peace and comfort. “God’s grace is sufficient for you!” “Glory in your infirmities, your weaknesses, your trials!” “Rest in the peace of God!”

We have a chance to grow spiritually—we gain more patience, more experience, and more hope when we go through difficult times. When you are at your seemingly weakest, the Bible says that you are at your strongest… it is during that critical time that you rely more on the Lord.

Romans 5:1-5 KJV:

“1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:
2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
3 And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;
4 And patience, experience; and experience, hope:
5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.”

2 Corinthians 12:7-10 KJV:

“7 And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure.
8 For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me.
9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.”

Philippians 4:6,7 KJV:

“6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

GOD IS NOT HIDING HIS FACE FROM YOU!!!

Should I Observe the Sabbath Day?

December 12, 2009

by Shawn Brasseaux

Does God demand that we observe the Sabbath day? What about the “Lord’s day?” Does it matter whether you go to church on Saturday or Sunday? In order to make sense of the Sabbath day, we must set aside religious tradition, and study God’s Word for the answer. Using dispensational Bible study—“rightly dividing the word of truth” as 2 Timothy 2:15 KJV instructs—we can determine whether or not we are bound to observe the Sabbath day.

Before we begin, let me attempt to clear up the confusion that denominationalism has created. Firstly, according to the Bible, Saturday has been and always will be the Sabbath day. Jesus Christ rose from the dead on Sunday, the first day of the week (Mark 16:1-2; Luke 23:54–24:1). This would make the last day of the week, Saturday, the Sabbath day. Please understand that the Sabbath was never Sunday in the Bible!

A second point I want to clear up is in regards to Sunday. According to religious tradition, Sunday is “the Lord’s day” and “the Christian Sabbath.” This is due to a misinterpretation of Revelation 1:10, which is actually referring to “the day of the Lord,” the seven-year Tribulation. “The day of the Lord” (“the Lord’s day”) is neither Saturday nor Sunday. There is no such thing as “Lord’s Day observance” in the Bible—that is a religious teaching, not a Bible teaching.

SABBATH DAY KEEPING IN TIME PAST

With that confusion sorted out, now we can look at the Sabbath day in the Old Testament. The first reference to the Sabbath day is Genesis 2:1-3 KJV:

“1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.
2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.
3And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.”

After the six days of creation, God rests on the seventh day and sets it apart from all the other days. Now, from this point until the Mosaic Law given 2,500 years later, there is no mention of Sabbath day keeping. In other words, Adam, Noah, and Abraham were never told to keep the Sabbath and the Bible never says they keep the Sabbath.

After Moses led the nation Israel out of Egypt, the LORD brought them to Mount Sinai, where they received the Mosaic Law (including the Ten Commandments). The fourth commandment given to Israel was, “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy” (Exodus 20:8-11; cf. Deuteronomy 5:12-16). The Sabbath day was the sign of the Mosaic Covenant (Law), which is why Sabbath day keeping was the fourth commandment. Pay close attention to what the LORD told Moses in Exodus 31:12-18 KJV:

“12 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
13 Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the LORD that doth sanctify you.
14 Ye shall keep the sabbath therefore; for it is holy unto you: every one that defileth it shall surely be put to death: for whosoever doeth any work therein, that soul shall be cut off from among his people.
15 Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD: whosoever doeth any work in the Sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death.
16 Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the sabbath, to observe the sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant.
17 It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed.
18 And he gave unto Moses, when he had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sinai, two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God.”

So, the Sabbath day was an ordinance given to Israel. Back in Exodus 19:3-6 KJV, God tells the Jews that He has set them apart from the world (the Gentiles):

“3 And Moses went up unto God, and the LORD called unto him out of the mountain, saying, Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel;
4 Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles’ wings, and brought you unto myself.
5 Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine:
6 And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.”

Turn to Psalm 132:13,14 KJV where the Bible says: “For the LORD hath chosen Zion; he hath desired it for his habitation. This is my rest for ever: here will I dwell; for I have desired it.”

Where has God chosen to dwell forever? Zion, King David’s throne in Jerusalem, Israel’s capital! At His Second Coming, the Lord Jesus Christ will set up His kingdom on earth, the sabbatical rest, the seventh 1,000-year period of time. During that millennial reign, the curse will be removed, Satan will be bound, and Christ will be reigning on earth as King of kings and Lord of lords! The weekly (Saturday) Sabbath day observance in Judaism was looking toward the day when the nation Israel would be the chief nation in the kingdom (the sabbatical rest of creation) (see Hebrews 3:7-19).

In Israel, the Sabbath was so special of a day, that if someone so much as picked up a few sticks on Saturday, the Lord commanded that this person be stoned to death (Numbers 15:32-36)! In Numbers 15:37-38, we see that the Lord also told Israel to fasten blue fringes on their garments to remind them of the Mosaic Law. These blue fringes helped remind Israel of their purpose in God’s plan.

SABBATH DAY KEEPING IN THE BUT NOW (PRESENT-DAY)

Sabbath day keeping was commanded in Israel’s program. As members of the Church the Body of Christ, we are not the nation Israel. We are not under the Mosaic Law either; rather, we are under grace (Romans 6:1,2,14,15). “For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace” (Romans 6:14). God through the Apostle Paul writes to us Gentiles in the Dispensation of Grace: “Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ” (Colossians 2:16-17). We are not bound by Sabbath day keeping today. The Apostle Paul further tells us that the Mosaic Law—especially the Ten Commandments—was put to death with Jesus Christ on the cross (Colossians 2:14).

In fact, Paul rebuked the Galatians who were polluted with legalism (Law-keeping) and who “observed days, and months, and times, and years” (Galatians 4:10). Furthermore, when Paul makes reference to the Ten Commandments, he never lists the Sabbath day (Romans 13:9). Going to church has nothing to do with Sabbath day keeping because, in the Bible, the Sabbath is always Saturday and never Sunday like religion teaches.

The Christian believers in the region of Galatia (present-day central Turkey) were being misled with the idea of Law-keeping, and Paul had to hurriedly write to them: “But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage? Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years. I am afraid of you, lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain” (Galatians 4:9-11 KJV). The Apostle fussed these Galatian believers in love: stop Law-keeping (including the Sabbath day-keeping) because you are under grace and you are not Israel! You are not under Israel’s performance-based system of works-religion. Paul would tell you the same thing today—do not keep the Sabbath!

SABBATH DAY KEEPING IN THE AGES TO COME

If you go back to Exodus 31:16,17, you read that the Sabbath day is God’s “perpetual covenant” with Israel. When Paul writes that the Sabbath day is a “shadow of things to come” in Colossians 2:16, what he means is that Sabbath day-keeping in Israel will resume after the rapture (because the Sabbath day typifies/previews Israel’s future earthly kingdom). Israel will go back under Temple worship during the Tribulation, and even in the Millennial Kingdom, the nation Israel will observe the Sabbath day (see Isaiah 66:22-24). Israel will observe the Sabbath day forever. The Sabbath day of the Old Testament was a “shadow” (prophetic preview) of God’s dealings with the nation Israel and the restoration of His authority in the earth.

CONCLUSION

You should not observe the Sabbath day. In this Dispensation of Grace, we are not under the Mosaic Law and we are not the nation Israel. We have no need to observe Israel’s feast days, religious festivals, or Sabbath days. We are the Church the Body of Christ. Meeting on Sunday has nothing to do with keeping the Sabbath. Sunday, the first day of the week, was simply the day when the early Gentile churches chose to meet (Acts 20:7; 1 Corinthians 16:2).

Do not confuse today’s believers assembling on Sunday with Israel’s Sabbath day keeping. Sunday is not the Lord’s Day, and neither is Saturday—the Lord’s day (the day of the LORD) is the period of the Tribulation and beyond!

Thanksgiving 2009 – Remember to Give God Thanks

November 26, 2009

Published in
The (Opelousas, Louisiana) Daily World

This past year has been difficult for many; consequently, you might feel indifferent this Thanksgiving season. Despite the negative news, I have much for which to be thankful, but I am not just referring to material possessions. How I thank the Lord for all that He has done for me, even though I was once His enemy. I am still living, and the Lord brought me through those difficult times.

Grace is something we do not deserve, but God gives it freely to all of us. I am so thankful that I do not have to keep the burdensome Mosaic Law or other ordinances/rules to be in good standing with God (Romans 3:21-24; Galatians 2:20,21). God accepts me in Christ, and my faith is counted for righteousness.

How God sent His Son, heaven’s best, to be slain and shed His blood for our redemption. How His resurrection has defeated the powers of evil and death. And that He had His Word written down, preserved forever in English in the King James Bible (Psalm 12:6,7). That God would love us, having longsuffering so that all could have opportunity to be saved (2 Peter 3:9), though most people will refuse His offer of salvation. God deserves our gratitude.

I am so thankful for my salvation. God has not only saved me from eternal hellfire, but also from works-religion and myself. He has “blessed me with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ” (Ephesians 1:3). Justification, forgiveness, sanctification, eternal life in the Lord’s presence, and joint-heirship with Christ are just some of my spiritual blessings, and they can never be lost. Indeed, I have more spiritual possessions to be thankful for than material possessions, and God has given them to me freely. What will you do with God’s offer of spiritual blessings and salvation?

I wish you and your family a safe and very Happy Thanksgiving.

“I Would Not That Ye Should Be Ignorant, Brethren!”

November 15, 2009

by Shawn Brasseaux

Someone once said that “ignorant brethren” is the world’s largest denomination. AMEN! Multitudes of people claim to be saved, but they are ignorant of what the Scriptures actually teach. These people are not stupid; “ignorance” simply means “a lack of teaching.” Pastors, Bible teachers, and evangelists should be “edifying” (maturing, building up) the Christians, as Ephesians 4:11-16 says, but it is evident that many of these church leaders are not taking their responsibility seriously.

Six times in his epistles, Paul writes, “I would not that ye should be ignorant brethren.” God does not want us to be in spiritual darkness. When we gather with fellow believers in Bible study, our inner man should be strengthened, and we should be gaining a greater understanding of God’s Word. The problem is that everything but the King James Bible is being taught in most churches today. This is why there is widespread spiritual immaturity, even among professing Christians.

As members of the Church the Body of Christ, the Lord has left us here on earth for a reason. Once we are able to get a firm understanding of God’s Word, we should be sharing it with the lost world. The devil knows this too, which is why he is attacking the Church Body of Christ. In time past, when God was dealing with Israel, the devil would send false prophets to confuse Israel, and lead them into pagan idolatry. Because God is now dealing with the Body of Christ, this is where the devil is working most heavily. If he can confuse us Christians and lead them away from sound doctrine, then there will be no one to oppose the false teaching he has his minions promoting on earth.

Let me give you an example. Most Christians are denominational, and have not been properly taught the Bible. If everyone would study God’s Word God’s way (“rightly divided;” 2 Timothy 2:15), the Body of Christ would be so effective in teaching the lost how to be saved and then grow in spiritual maturity. Instead, they are sidetracked into serving the denomination, and not the Lord. Some Christians show no interest in rightly dividing the Bible anyway; they prefer their church’s teaching instead of God’s pure Word! Denominationalism has done so much damage to Christianity, but the Lord’s pure Word is still here with us, and in the end, God will prevail!!! 🙂

In the city of Corinth, Paul dealt with “baby Christians.” Physically, these Corinthians were adults, but spiritually they were babies. They had heard plenty of sound teaching from Paul and his workers in the ministry, but they failed to apply the sound doctrine to their lives. The Corinthians were carnal (fleshly, worldly), which is why their assembly had a host of problems and divisions (1 Corinthians 3:1-4). Galatia was another region in which Paul ministered. They also knew sound doctrine from the beginning, but legalism/works-religion crept in, and led them all astray (Galatians 5:7-9). They allowed false teachers to pollute God’s Word, and said nothing to fight back. Is the same not true of Christendom today?

The epistle of Hebrews speaks of the readers as being “dull of hearing;” these Hebrews needed to be re-taught basic doctrine because they failed to listen the first time, so they could not mature into the deeper concepts of the Scriptures (Hebrews 5:11-14). Instead of requiring solid spiritual food like a mature saint, they could only tolerate a spiritual diet of milk (baby food, the Bible basics). This has happened in Christendom today—too few mature Christians, and sadness fills God’s heart to see it.

Look at what Paul prayed for the Philippians (1:9): “And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment.” Paul wanted them to grow spiritually, having a greater understanding of God’s Word (cf. Ephesians 1:17-19; Colossians 1:9-11). The more we read and study God’s Word rightly divided, the more we appreciate Him and His Word, and we understand where we are in His plan for the ages. We are thankful in our position in Christ, blessed with all spiritual blessings, and Christ living in us. Religion and denominationalism is not what God wants formed in us—God’s goal in saving us is to have “Christ formed in us” (Galatians 4:19).

When a lost person is saved, it is analogous to a baby being delivered. Just as a baby should mature physically, the new believer should be maturing spiritually. We should be better off spiritually than when we were saved: are you? The whole purpose of sound Bible teaching in church is to have you “rooted and built up in Him [Christ], and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving” (Colossians 2:7 KJV). Have you sat in church for years, but learned nothing from the Scriptures there? Something is wrong, then!

I hope and pray that anyone and everyone reading this can grow spiritually. Whether it is stepping into grace by faith in Christ and getting saved, or a Christian breaking away from denominationalism and receiving God’s pure Word by faith, it is a step in the right direction, growing up spiritually, fully mature (“perfect”) to serve God whenever He needs you (2 Timothy 3:15-17). May we all abandon man-made religion and denominationalism, and fully embrace God’s pure Word rightly divided.

After all, only God’s Word counts in eternity!

Is Your Church the Right One?

November 2, 2009

by Shawn Brasseaux

Without attacking or belittling anyone, I wish to provide you with information on evaluating and/or selecting a local church. Sadly, many people admit they go to a particular local church for three reasons: (1) family and friends go/went there, (2) the church building and grounds look nice, or (3) the church has nice programs and helps the community. Unfortunately, sound doctrine is often ignored when most people select a local church. Why? They know not sound doctrine in the first place! It is rather strange that very few people even know what their church’s statement of faith even is!

Friends and brethren, the devil is the master deceiver and master counterfeiter. The church building may be a multi-million dollar state-of-the-art auditorium, but that does not necessarily make it the best church. In fact, it may not even be proper to call it a “church” in the Biblical sense!

Doctrine is extremely important, for it separates us Christians from the erroneous teachings of the religions of the world. Be sure you understand a church’s statement of faith before you become involved with it. Ask the pastor questions and/or request a copy of their statement of faith. Prayerfully consider a local church because, as the Bible warns in Acts 20:28-30, there are many “wolves in sheep’s clothing.” Avoid mega-churches—that is, churches that have thousands of members—because they are known for their damnable prosperity and social gospels.

I hope that you find this special Bible study useful in finding (or testing) the doctrines of the local church in question. Of course, we cannot find the “perfect church,” and we seek not a “perfect church.” We desire what God desires—a sound local church. While there are many issues we could note here, here are seven major fundamental doctrines of Scripture that must always be upheld in a local church!

ISSUE #1 – DOES THE LOCAL CHURCH ACKNOWLEDGE GOD’S WORD AS THE FINAL AUTHORITY, AND THAT THE KING JAMES BIBLE IS THE INFALLIBLE WORD OF GOD IN ENGLISH?

  • The King James Bible should be the sole authority in the local church: it should be seen and believed as the infallible (perfect) Word of God for us English-speaking people. The pastor should not be using a modern English Bible such as NIV, NASB, NKJV, NRSV, ESV, etc. Furthermore, he (the pastor) should not be the final authority; he should not be a “King James corrector.”
  • We have the complete revelation from God in His written Word, a preserved and translated copy—the King James Bible—of the inspired Hebrew Old Testament and the inspired Greek New Testament (1 Corinthians 13:8-13; 2 Timothy 3:15-17; 2 Peter 1:19-21).
  • God’s Word is superior to religious tradition because church tradition is traditionally wrong (Matthew 15:1-9; Mark 7:1-13). The pastor should be teaching the Holy Scriptures without relying on hunches, “visions,” “angelic appearances,” feelings, emotions, human viewpoint, religious tradition, and so on.
  • The church should believe in the inerrancy (lacking mistakes) and plenary verbal inspiration of the Holy Scriptures, or that every word belongs in the King James Bible because every word is of God. Otherwise, do not give this church your time or your money.

ISSUE #2 – DOES THE LOCAL CHURCH ACKNOWLEDGE THE TRIUNE GOD AND JESUS CHRIST AS FULLY GOD AND FULLY MAN?

  • The church should teach and believe the doctrine of the Trinity/Godhead, that God exists in three coequal and co-eternal Persons—Father, Son (Jesus Christ), and Holy Ghost.
  • There are many “Christian” groups that deny the Scriptural evidence that God exists in three Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Bible teaches that God is one God, but He exists in three Persons, all being coequal and coeternal (Genesis 1:26; Matthew 3:16,17; Matthew 28:19; Acts 5:3,4; 2 Corinthians 13:14; Ephesians 2:18; Colossians 2:8,9; 1 John 5:7).
  • What is the local church’s view of Jesus Christ? Does it believe Jesus was just a “good man,” or “just another prophet of God?” Does it believe Jesus is a created being and not God Almighty? The Bible is clear that Jesus Christ is God Almighty, JEHOVAH, manifested in human flesh (Isaiah 44:6; Isaiah 48:12; Mark 1:1; John 1:1-4, 14; Ephesians 3:9; Philippians 2:5-11; Colossians 2:8,9; Titus 2:13; Revelation 1:11, 17).
  • Any local church or pastor that denies the Godhead and/or the deity of Jesus Christ is clearly false and is not Christian. Consequently, that local church and pastor should be avoided.

ISSUE #3 – DOES THE LOCAL CHURCH PREACH ETERNAL SALVATION IS FOUND EXCLUSIVELY IN PAUL’S GOSPEL, THE FINISHED CROSSWORK OF JESUS CHRIST?

  • Does the local church believe that faith alone in Paul’s Gospel (The Gospel of the Grace of God of 1 Corinthians 15:1-4) as being the only way to salvation? Does it teach that the finished crosswork of Jesus Christ is sufficient payment for our sins? Or, does it believe and teach that you have to do good works in order to get saved and/or keep that salvation? We are saved and kept saved by Christ’s finished work on Calvary, not by our own works (Romans 3:19,20,28; Romans 4:1-5; Romans 8:1; 1 Corinthians 1:18-21; Galatians 2:20,21; Galatians 3:1-3; Ephesians 2:8,9; Colossians 2:6,7; Titus 3:5).
  • The Bible says that believers are secure in Jesus Christ, that they will never lose their salvation because of sin (Romans 5:1; Romans 8:16,17,31-39; 2 Corinthians 5:6-8; Ephesians 4:30-32; 2 Timothy 1:12).
  • Does the local church teach multiple ways to heaven, or does it teach that salvation is only found in Jesus Christ (John 14:6; Acts 4:10-12; 1 Timothy 2:5)? Does it believe that we can approach God through the dead saints and/or the virgin Mary? Does it teach that we can merit God’s favor by keeping rites and rituals (such as the sacraments)? If the local church demands that you must get water baptized, tithe, repent, confess your sins, or anything else before you can be saved, that you must do these things to get saved, or that you must do these things to prove you are saved, then leave that church and never return. This is “another gospel” of which the Apostle Paul warned (2 Corinthians 11:3,4; Galatians 1:6-9)!

ISSUE #4 – IS THE LOCAL CHURCH “PAULINE?” THAT IS, DOES IT RECOGNIZE THAT PAUL IS OUR APOSTLE IN THIS THE DISPENSATION OF GRACE?

  • Does the local church acknowledge that Paul is our apostle in this the Dispensation of Grace (Romans 11:13; Romans 15:16; 1 Corinthians 14:37; 2 Timothy 1:11)? The local church should teach that in Paul’s epistles alone, Romans through Philemon, we find the doctrine, duty, walk, and destiny of the Church the Body of Christ (Ephesians 3:1-11). Paul is God’s spokesman to us and the Lord Jesus Christ has set forth the Apostle Paul as our “pattern” (1 Timothy 1:15,16)—we follow Paul as he follows Christ (1 Corinthians 11:1).
  • Or, does the local church force you to follow the instructions Jesus Christ gave to the Israel (Matthew 10:5-7; Matthew 15:24; John 4:22; Romans 15:8) in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John? Does the local church instruct you to follow and mimic Israel’s tithing system, Israel’s water baptism, and Israel’s signs, miracles, and wonders? We are not under Israel’s Mosaic Law (Romans 6:14,15; Colossians 2:14; Galatians 5:1). The entire book of Galatians deals with legalism and Law-keeping, and Paul emphasizes that neither has anything to do with us today! We have not replaced the nation Israel. Therefore, we cannot steal Israel’s verses that belong in Israel’s program.
  • In this Dispensation of Grace, the Apostle Paul writes that we are not under the nation Israel’s performance-based acceptance system of law, but rather we are under grace (Romans 6:14,15; Titus 3:5). We have no legalistic doctrine in the Church the Body of Christ because we are separate from the nation Israel (Romans 11:11,15,25). The Christian life is not us living the life of Christ, but us letting Christ live His life in and through us as we believe His Word to us (Romans 12:1,2; Galatians 2:20; Galatians 6:22,23; Ephesians 4:17-25; Philippians 1:21; Philippians 2:13; Colossians 2:6,7; 1 Thessalonians 2:13).
  • All Scripture is inspired of God (2 Timothy 3:16), and we study all 66 books of the King James Bible, but we should study the Bible “rightly divided” (2 Timothy 2:15 KJV). We recognize that the Church the Body of Christ is separate from the nation Israel. All of the Bible is for us, but not all of the Bible is to us or about us.
  • Avoid churches that embrace the charismatic movement (signs, healing miracles, tongue speaking, et cetera), existentialism (feel-good “worship” services), and formalism (rites, rules, rituals, ceremonies, and so on).

Trouble is Afoot in the United States (by Nolan Guilbeau)

Maintaining a free unbiased press is one of the cornerstones of our democracy. There’s abundant evidence that mainstream media (MSM) rejects fairness in journalistic duties. Consequently, Judeo-Christian principles of the founding Fathers and the U. S. Constitution are trampled upon, thus altering the manner America governs itself.

For decades media engaged in self-agendas fraternizing the ranks of the powerful, wealthy and influential representing the ambitions of special interest groups and government. They practice what they do best—reporting with predictable inaccuracies which is their crowned jewel as well as purposely ignoring many relevant news events.

The developing controversies surrounding the President’s avowed communist adviser, the ACORN scandal and patriots exercising their right in a protest march on Washington, the MSM remained completely silent for many days before offering a token report on these issues. Thanks to conservative news networks for informing the public with accessible undeniable documented facts that were absolutely newsworthy. Where were mainstream media journalists for these developing historical events?

The bias, stonewalling and apparent complicity of suppressing important news are unmistakably obvious, speaking volumes to the public, even to one without journalistic savvy. Americans continue to be buffeted with media propaganda intended to distort and conceal truth on issues. Liberal media agendas and the media’s partnership with big government, a union for disaster, provide a treacherous path to ‘transform’ America to a socialistic/communistic society.

Take heed, the highest official in position of governmental powers has made clear the socialist plans for this nation by stating, “The coalition of powers to bring about redistributing of wealth,” which is a Marxist doctrine. Thomas Jefferson’s warning is worth repeating, “The democracy will CEASE to exist when you take from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not.”

Big government has a partner, mainstream media, to do its bidding for the purpose of ‘controlling’ we the people. Quoting communist Lenin, “A lie told often enough becomes truth.” Mainstream media and government have successfully won the grand prize, “A vote of complete no confidence,” as reflected by current ratings. The many unscrupulous tactics used in journalism are UN-AMERICAN and totally disingenuous! Americans, speak out now!!

Don’t Be Satan’s Fool

October 7, 2009

by Shawn Brasseaux

When the Lord Jesus Christ sent the Apostle Paul into the pagan world with the Gospel of Grace, the devil fought it with everything he had. In addition to intense persecution and martyrdom, these early Gentile churches were bombarded with legalism. “Judaizers” were coming in and trying to force the Mosaic Law and circumcision on Paul’s Gentile converts; the resulting confusion was the devil’s method of hindering God’s work.

Circa A.D. 51, Paul and Barnabas met with James, Peter, and John in Jerusalem to discuss the matter (Luke’s account is Acts chapter 15; Paul’s account, Galatians chapter 2). It was agreed that Paul and Barnabas would continue with the Gentiles in grace, apart from the Law; Peter, James, and John would continue with Israel on the basis of the Mosaic Law (Galatians 2:9). Eventually, that Jewish economy faded away, and today, God is dealing with the world in grace (through the Pauline epistles, Romans through Philemon).

Religious people are being burdened with Law-keeping today. They are forced to tithe, get water baptized, keep the Sabbath, and so on. Today, Christendom as a whole is still struggling with legalism, “Do this, do that, and God will accept you.” On the contrary, grace is the opposite: “You have God’s grace and acceptance in Christ.”

As Paul wrote, the Galatian believers were “bewitched” (devilishly tricked) into following legalism (Galatians 3:1-3). In all the confusion, these poor believers forgot their identity in Christ. These Gentile believers did not need Israel’s physical circumcision, or Law-keeping to have God’s favor. If you are a believer in Christ today, you are not Israel, and God has already (past tense) accepted you “in the beloved,” in Christ (Ephesians 1:6).

God does not expect you to follow some rigid set of rules to be accepted. He merely asks for your faith, your trust. He has done everything for you to be forgiven and justified. We cannot justify ourselves; we are filthy sinners. However, the perfect sacrifice, Christ Jesus, was offered on our behalf, being raised from the dead. “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved” (Acts 16:31).

God Has Already Spoken to Us

October 7, 2009

by Shawn Brasseaux

In the Old Testament economy, the nation Israel was accustomed to seeing theophanies (God the Son, Jesus Christ, in human form) and angelic beings. If angels appeared to people in the Bible, should we be looking for them to appear to us as well? Today, religious people claim to have been visited by angels or the virgin Mary, and religious people claim that God spoke to them in an audible voice. The Apostle John wrote in 1 John 4:1 that his Jewish believers needed to “test the spirits, whether they are of God.” Likewise, we need to analyze these “supernatural” claims from the biblical—and most importantly, dispensational—perspective. Just because someone claims to be of God does not necessarily make it so.

From about 1600 B.C. until about 68 A.D., God’s Word was recorded by human penmen as the Holy Spirit guided them (in some cases, God actually spoke to these men in an audible voice). We read in 2 Peter 1:20,21 KJV: “Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.”

There was no complete Bible until about A.D. 70, so before then, God needed several ways to convey His words to man. Thus, the Lord would either send an angel or He would personally appear to men to give them His instructions. Also, there were gifted men who had various supernatural (God-given) abilities in the early church (Romans 12:4-8; 1 Corinthians 12:1-11). But, these spiritual gifts vanished when the Bible was completed.

Notice 1 Corinthians 13:8-13 KJV:

“8 Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
9 For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.
10 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.
11 When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.
13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.”

The “that which is perfect is come” is the completed revelation from God; when the complete Bible came in the first century A. D., “then that which [was] in part [was] done away” (that is, the supernatural gifts ceased when the completed Word of God, the Bible, came). Today, we have no need for angels or visions and God has no reason to speak to us today in an audible voice. We have God’s revealed and written Word preserved in the King James Bible. God has nothing more to say to us than that which is already found in the Bible, His written record. Everything that God has to say to us is already pre-recorded in those 66 books. All you need to know from God is His written Word.

We read in 2 Timothy 3:15-17 KJV:

“15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.”

The Bible is the final authority, not religious doctrines or preachers’ opinions; the Bible alone is the inspired Word of God (not creeds, commentaries, catechisms, or “Christian” books.)

So, it begs the question: what are these people seeing when they claim to have angelic appearances or “supernatural encounters?” It could be hallucinations. Perhaps they are seeing “angels of light” as spoken of in 2 Corinthians 11:13-15, when Satan’s ministers disguise themselves as “wolves in sheep’s clothing” (cf. Acts 20:28-30; Galatians 1:6-9).

Do not be deceived because the devil will prey on those not firmly grounded in the Scriptures rightly divided. Get into the Bible, and guard yourself against these types of false teachings such as supernatural beings appearing to us. Colossians 2:18,19 KJV: “Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath NOT seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, and not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God.”

Psukhē – Biblical Psychology, Repentance, Depression, Addictions

Psukhē: An Introduction to Biblical Psychology
Shawn Brasseaux

[3 October 2009]

Have you ever heard the expression, “A mind is a terrible thing to waste?” Do you know why this is true? There could be as many as 100 billion neurons (nerve cells) in your brain, totaling more than one quadrillion (1,000,000,000,000,000) neural connections—and to think that the Lord God engineered that! Psychologists are scientists who study mental processes and behavior in order to better understand why we humans do the things we do. Unfortunately, most psychologists, like much of our world, ignore the greatest authority in regards to human nature: God’s Word, the Holy Scriptures, the Bible. In this four-part series entitled “Psukhē” (pronounced “su-kay,” Greek for “mind,” “soul,” from which the word “psychology” is derived), we discuss the human mind from a Scriptural point-of-view. The man-made discipline of psychology has limitations; God’s Word does not!

* * *

To begin our discussion, let us look at this question: What does the Bible mean when it says Adam was “made in the image of God” (Genesis 1:27)? Of course, God was a Spirit and not a man, so this statement must be referring to something invisible, and not a physical resemblance. Adam in his original state was absolutely perfect: he had a brilliant mind, a complex seat of emotions, and a spirit that enabled him to communicate and fellowship with his Creator, the LORD God. Yes, the first man Adam was made in God’s image!

However, the Bible tells us that after the fall of Adam, man’s makeup changed drastically. In the day that sin entered man’s body and mind, mankind died spiritually, resulting in broken fellowship with the Lord. Over 900 years later, Adam died physically (Genesis 5:5). Because of our genetic link to Adam, we have inherited his sin nature, born spiritually dead, and this is why we are born enemies of God (Romans 8:6-8; Ephesians 2:1-3). Consequently, Genesis 5:3 says that we are made in “the likeness and image of Adam.” (The Lord Jesus Christ has given us the chance to be reconciled with God via His finished work of Calvary). The prophet Jeremiah (17:9) writes that our hearts are “deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked.” As the Lord said in His earthly ministry, it is this wicked heart and it evil thoughts that precipitate (produce) our sins (Matthew 15:18-20; Mark 7:20-23).

God equipped us humans with a seat of emotions that respond to our environment. When God the Son became flesh, and dwelt among mankind, He cried, He felt righteous anger, He prayed in agony, and so on (Matthew 8:24,25; Mark 3:5; Luke 2:52; Luke 22:43,44; Hebrews 5:7,8; et al.). There is nothing wrong with emotions, and even anger is not sinful if properly handled and righteously justified (Matthew 5:22 KJV; Ephesians 4:26; cf. Christ’s righteous anger in Mark 3:5). The problem is that our sin nature has distorted our feelings and emotions. Emotions can exploit our circumstances, and deceive us by giving us a false view of reality. One example is when you a going through a period of great trouble, you may “feel” like God has abandoned you. However, we take it by faith that God’s Holy Spirit never leaves us if we are believers in Christ, regardless of whether or not we “feel” His presence (Ephesians 1:13; Ephesians 4:30).

Relying on our emotions instead of God’s Word is obviously unwise, but it can also be life threatening in some cases. One instance we may be extremely happy; the next moment we feel hopelessly depressed. People get so “down in the dumps” for so long, they may contemplate suicide. We cannot live our lives based on our feelings because our feelings change, sometimes instantaneously (God’s Word, on the other hand, never changes). If we let them, our emotions and feelings will cloud the truth of God’s Word. This is the very reason why we cannot depend on emotional highs, even in “worship” service (we focus on the emotions, and therefore lose sight of the Lord Jesus Christ). Unfortunately, many people today are placing too much emphasis on emotions in church services.

Next week, we will discuss how to manage your feelings and your emotions. We will discuss how you need to allow the Lord to “renew your mind.” This is the key to living the grace life that God has for you as a member of the Church the Body of Christ!

Psukhē II: Biblical Repentance
Shawn Brasseaux
– arcministries@gmail.com
[11 October 2009]

In our introduction to biblical psychology last week, we learned that human nature is evil. Our thought processes and actions are opposed to God. By default, we are lost sons of Adam, enemies of God from day 1. But, the Bible says that the solution to man’s sin problem is the God-Man, the Lord Jesus Christ, and His finished work on Calvary’s cross. Prior to each of us coming to the knowledge of salvation, we were serving the devil, “dead in our trespasses and sins” (Ephesians 2:1-3; cf. Colossians 1:13).

The only “wisdom” we had was that which we inherited from Adam, and that was foolishness. But, the Holy Spirit illuminated our darkened hearts with the “glorious light of the gospel of Christ,” and after we took that Gospel by faith, we became “a new creature” (2 Corinthians 4:3,4; 2 Corinthians 5:17 KJV). Just like the moment when we were saved, God changed our desires and thought processes, He must continually keep our minds from returning to those old, carnal thought processes. Now, in part II, we will look at biblical repentance.

* * *

Remember, when we discussed the “Grace Lifers” and “Reflection” series weeks ago, we learned from the Scriptures that we believers have two natures. For a refresher, see Galatians 5:16,17. The indwelling Holy Spirit is opposed to our sin nature, and vice versa. As Paul said Romans chapter 7, he wanted to do right, but evil would always surface in his inner man. We still live in these unredeemed human bodies of sin, so we constantly feel the pull to go back to our old lifestyles that we had prior to salvation.

How can we have victory in our lives over temptations to sin if all we think about is sin? As the Bible would say, “repent!” Before we continue, we need a biblical, not a religious, definition of repentance. Consider Romans 12:2 KJV: “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” Now, see Ephesians 4:23 KJV: “And be renewed in the spirit of your mind.” Biblical repentance is a “change in mind,” a “rethinking.” For instance, when God promises something, He will never break that promise because He will never change His mind (Romans 11:29).

As Christians, we can continue thinking the foolish thoughts that come naturally, or we can go to God’s Word and gain and apply His wisdom! The lost world around us is steeped in gross sin because all it knows is what comes natural. Lost people do not have the indwelling Holy Spirit to guide and enlighten them. “There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death” (Proverbs 14:12 KJV). The only source of true wisdom is God’s Word: our “wisdom” will always lead to death! Remember when Adam and Eve ate, how they “reasoned” it was okay to eat, despite what God told them? The result of their sin was death!

Let us look more at biblical repentance, as Paul wrote about it in 2 Corinthians 10:4-6 KJV:

“4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but might through God to the pulling down of strong holds;
5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
6 And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.”

Everything we learn in life must be evaluated on the basis of God’s Word. Ask yourself: Does the Bible support or refute this idea?

When we take God’s Word by faith, everything else—human viewpoint, philosophy, and tradition—takes a “back-seat” in our mind. God’s Word becomes our Final Authority: biblical repentance is your thought processes being conformed to God’s Word. According to Romans 12:2, once your mind is transformed with God’s Word, your life will have some drastic changes! The result of biblical repentance is your life bringing glory and honor to the Lord; you are no longer a servant of sin, but a servant of the Lord!

Human viewpoints such as philosophy and religious tradition are unreliable. The power of God can only be found in His written Word (the King James Bible), and it is this power that is needed to bring us to biblical repentance. Our thought processes must be enlightened with God’s Truth. How are we enlightened? When we study God’s Word, rightly divided, of course, the Holy Spirit will interpret the Scriptures for us: “Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things” (2 Timothy 2:7 KJV). Yes, you can understand God’s Word, without a seminary degree!!

“The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple” (Psalm 119:130 KJV). We need to be thinking on the Holy Scriptures as often as we can, so that the Holy Spirit can use them to work in and through us (1 Thessalonians 2:13). This is the key to transforming our vile minds inherited from Adam; once our inner man has been dealt with, our outer man will reflect the inward transformation. Over time, our views will change to match God’s view… that is biblical repentance!

Psukhē III: The Key to Leaving the City of Self-Pity
Shawn Brasseaux
– arcministries@gmail.com
[18 October 2009]

In our introduction to biblical psychology, we learned that emotions sometimes cause us to see distorted reality. Emotions are quite strange. Feelings we had years ago during a difficult time resurface as if the incident is occurring right now. Our minds and hearts can deceive us (remember Jeremiah 17:9). The second installment focused on biblical repentance, or a change in mind brought on by the indwelling Holy Spirit. In this third article of the Psukhē series, we will look at depression, and how it can be solved with biblical repentance.

* * *

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, 20 million Americans suffer from depression. Depression can be brought on by conditions beyond a person’s control (hormones, chemical imbalances, et cetera). If you are struggling with depression, please know that we are here for you and we want to encourage/edify you using the Holy Scriptures, and that the Lord would most definitely want you to seek medical help if it is life-threatening. Our purpose in this study is to inform you as to how we should view depression and how to handle it as the Holy Scriptures instruct.

Just about everyone knows the story of Job found in the Old Testament. The Lord allowed Satan to afflict Job; if anyone felt depression, Job did (Job 3:1-ff.; Job 7:11). Or look at Moses, who would get upset and discouraged when leading the murmuring, ungrateful Israelites through the wilderness. Paul and his co-workers in the ministry knew about depression (2 Corinthians 1:3-11). The twelve apostles of Israel faced opposition and depression, too. Do you think Noah felt depressed during the 120 years that he built that gopher ark, with the lost passing by, gawking and mocking? Even the Lord felt depression in His earthly ministry, when the unbelieving Jews lacked faith in Him as their Messiah-King, and when He had to go Calvary’s cross (Mark 14:33-36; Luke 22:42,43).

New Christians who have abandoned vile lifestyles have a hard time forgiving themselves. As “new creatures in Christ,” they remember their past mistakes and dwell on them. In your past, you might have done something of which you are ashamed. Maybe you feel like God hates you, or that He still holds it against you. If you have already come to God by faith in His Son Jesus Christ, He has already forgiven you “in Christ” (Ephesians 4:32; Colossians 2:13). Do not let your emotions and feelings distort reality and make you feel depressed or worthless—no matter how you feel, God’s Word says you are forgiven… forever!

Whatever you did, God is a God of second chances. Fortunately, His grace covers our failures and weaknesses: “Where sin abounded, grace did much more abound” (Romans 5:20,21). God’s love for you in Christ can never be rescinded. He is there to scoop us up when we fall and destroy ourselves in self-pity. He consoles us, gives us peace and joy, even in the direst circumstances (2 Corinthians 12:7-10). We might have deliberately made those mistakes, but He is still there for us when we need Him the most. Thank you, Lord! Remember, let us never take advantage of grace by sinning all we want, with assurance of getting away with it (Romans 6:1,2).

Everyone will experience depression at one time in life, so we need solid Bible teaching to learn how to cope with depression. Whenever we forget the truth of God’s Word, we seem to fall into a state of self-pity, or feeling sorry for ourselves. This will lead to depression, so we have to stop the wrong thinking before it grows worse.

This past summer, I went through a period of intense emotional trouble. Instead of allowing it to overcome me (though it came close), I thought on the Lord’s Word, and how I thank Him that I survived it. He brought us through all those low points and difficult times our ministry faced these past three-and-a-half years. Occasionally, those memories still resurface, and the more I dwell on them, the more it upsets me. Yes, it is easier said than done, but you need to control your thinking. Cry, grow angry, or laugh, but do not let your emotions go out of control because they will get the best of you. As we discussed before, do not live your life placing much emphasis on your emotions because your emotions change. We need to rely on something that never changes: God’s Word.

If you are going to serve the Lord, you will be opposed on every side. “Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution” (2 Timothy 3:12 KJV). You can let it drive you crazy, or just let it “slide off like water on a duck’s back.” A favorite Bible passage of mine to support this is 2 Corinthians 4:8-10 KJV:

“8 We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair;
9 Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed;
10 Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body.”

We are not going to allow self-pity to distract us from doing the Lord’s work. Let the critics say what they want, but they cannot change God’s Word.

“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think of these things” (Philippians 4:8 KJV). Like we learned in part II, biblical repentance is the key to having victory over our natural, evil thought processes. The power in God’s Word can and will purge our wicked minds, replacing our foolishness with His wisdom.

Do not allow depression to control you: think on everything that God has provided for you in Christ—justification, sanctification, reconciliation, redemption, eternal life, forgiveness, grace, love, joy, peace, temperance, spiritual blessings, to name just a few! As long as you keep your mind on these things, you feel gratitude, not self-pity. Never cease from thanking the Lord for everything He has done for us!

Gratitude to God is the key to depression: a thankful heart has no reason for feeling self-pity!

Psukhē IV: Not Brought Under the Power of Any

Prior to salvation, our minds were slaves of the devil. Today, if we have experienced salvation, we need to be careful in regards to other types of bondage. As Christians, should we involve ourselves with hypnosis, meditation, and drugs and alcohol? Setting aside bias and treating this article with utmost care (without condemning anyone), we conclude the “Psukhē” series by answering this question.

HYPNOSIS

Hypnosis can be defined as “a trancelike state of heightened susceptibility to the suggestion of others.” In other words, when someone is hypnotized, they are not in absolute control of their mental processes. The person’s mind is now open to any and every suggestion, no matter how false (unscriptural) it is. Hypnosis leaves room for false teaching, opening you to the devil’s influence. Thus, hypnosis has no place in the Christian life. Instead of God’s Word “working effectually in us that believe,” we run the risk of people influencing us contrary to Scripture. “All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any” (1 Corinthians 6:12 KJV). By the way, that word “expedient” means “profitable/beneficial.” Although we are under grace, and not under the Mosaic Law like Israel was, this does not give us license to do anything and everything we want (that is, a careless lifestyle). Titus 2:11,12 KJV say: “For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world.”

MEDITATION

Meditation is a technique practiced by religious people—religion is counterfeit, resembling God’s Word but actually being anti-Bible. Repeating one word—a “mantra”—numerous times is supposed to refocus your attention, which results in an altered state of consciousness. Reciting rosaries and “breath prayers” are two forms of meditation in the realm of religion, something the Bible never supports. Meditation is used to relieve stress, or used to bring solutions to life problems. God’s Word can relieve stress and God’s Word has the solutions we are seeking. Meditation, on the other hand, is mindless repetition, and like hypnosis, it has no role in the life of the believer because it attempts to replace God’s Word. As the Bible says, “we will not be brought under the power of any!”

DRUGS AND ALCOHOL

Should Christians smoke cigarettes? The American Cancer Society’s website says: “Cigarette smoking is the major single cause of cancer mortality (death) in the United States.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported as many as 43.4 million American adults were smokers in 2007—almost seven percent of the United States population! People smoke for a variety of reasons: relieve stress, try something new, or because they simply cannot quit (due to nicotine, one of the most addictive substances known to man). But again, we have God’s Word to relieve stress!

Marijuana, cocaine, and ecstasy have destroyed so many lives, especially young lives. Many months back, a classmate confided in me that he had drug problems in the past, but he was praying to quit. If you are a Christian today trapped in the clutches of drugs, God does not want you to live in bondage. I love you in the Lord, which is why I urge you to stop smoking cigarettes and/or doing other drugs. I will not condemn anyone, but we need to be caring for our bodies. The Christian’s body is a temple of the Holy Spirit: your body has been set apart from mainstream mankind (1 Corinthians 6:19).

Christians consuming alcoholic beverages can be quite controversial. Setting aside any bias (from me or anyone else), we go back to the verse that brought us to this article: “All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any” (1 Corinthians 6:12 KJV).

Why do people drink alcohol? Like other drugs, alcohol brings about a “high feeling.” Actually, alcohol may give you a “high feeling,” but alcohol is a depressant—it actually slows down your nervous system, weakening your inhibitions (self-control). Although there are some Christians who drink alcohol and think nothing of it, this is unwise. As members of the Church the Body of Christ, we should not compromise with the world. Alcohol does not have any place in our lives. Even in small amounts, alcohol alters your mind (that is why designated drivers are told to abstain from all alcohol).

Alcohol use is widespread among students in middle school, high school, and college (trust me, I know). How can we reduce drug and alcohol use? It goes back to biblical repentance. We need to analyze drug and alcohol use from the Bible’s standpoint. Our main goal is not to point fingers of judgment, but to point to God’s Word as the final authority. We need to have sober, clear minds, as the Bible says, “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7 KJV).

Ephesians 5:16-19 KJV tells us:

“18 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
17 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.
18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;”

Alcohol and drugs cloud responsible thought processes, just like religion, hypnosis, and meditation. Yes, religion can be thought of as a drug, too. The good news is that the Lord can break all bondage, whether religious chains or addiction to drugs and alcohol!

Alcohol, drugs (including cigarettes), mediation, and hypnosis should not be influencing our thought processes. We should not be allowing something to control us. Instead, we need an intelligent understanding of God’s Word. The power and feelings brought on by drugs are temporal; God’s Word brings eternal results. God’s Word can comfort us—we do not need drugs! God’s Word brings eternal life—drugs cannot!

The fruits of the Holy Spirit found in Galatians 5:22,23 KJV are far better than anything drugs can provide: “…love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.” Drugs promote the opposite: hate, depression, strife, quick-temperedness, harshness, wickedness, unbelief, pride, and incontinence (no self-control).

* * *

In concluding the Psukhē series, I urge you to take care of this tool God has given us. Watch what you put into your mind. Do not believe everything you hear. Align everything with God’s Word (King James Bible) “rightly divided,” and let that be your guide. Memorize Bible verses (especially the verses in Paul’s epistles, Romans through Philemon), and let the Lord’s Word work effectually in you as you believe it. Let the Lord continually renew your mind, biblical repentance… that is just one part of our “reasonable service” (Romans 12:1 KJV)!

“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.”
