Church and State Not So ‘Separate’ (by Nolan Guilbeau)

Half a century ago a young aspiring, now world-renowned, evangelist gave the following warning: “The three most dangerous forces in the world are Communism, Islam, and Roman Catholicism.” Voluminous historical evidence prior and since largely substantiates this statement. Authorities have recently disclosed the operation of suspected Russian communist spy rings in America engaged in grave acts with intentions to harm and undermine our nation’s sovereignty.

Communism is an evil, ungodly ideology of force enslaving, conquering, denying all people of their inalienable God-given freedoms. This recent report is further proof worldwide communism continues to exist and function contrary to reports following the collapse of the Iron Curtain in Europe in 1989. Announcing their demise was merely propaganda, a lie to deceive the world. Currently scattered all over the globe, large numbers of Muslims are propagandizing and waging war by force of arms endeavoring to establish Islamic rule/control by Sharia law with the U. S. a target. History reveals this entity has a completely failed record regarding human rights and freedom.

Roman Catholicism’s hierarchy is presently at the helm steering global ecumenism in efforts to unite ALL church bodies under their exclusive control and leadership. Documented historical facts reveal this institution isn’t exactly a friend of human rights and personal freedoms.

Nevertheless, modern Catholic writers praise their actions of the Middle Ages, even defending the atrocities and cruelties perpetuated on millions of innocent victims. They maintain the Roman Potentate possesses the primacy over ALL governments with absolute power to legislate, judge, punish any resisting the collar of oppression/bondage of Rome. Unlike the Middle Ages they lack enforcement power by marauding thugs and murderers of the Crusades. Her rights are continually defended asserting her government and conduct have never changed. (History of the Catholic Church, Gustavus, page 155).

Free thought, free speech, free press, etc., cherished in America are opposed to every point advocating the “combination of church and state with the church having the primacy.” This is totally contrary to Article I of America’s Bill of Rights of the United States Constitution. A common thread identifiable in these entitles is despotic ambitions with goals to dominate the world!! “Evil men understand NOT judgment [justice]” (Proverbs 28:5).

The Spirit-Filled Father

June 20, 2010

by Shawn Brasseaux

What is a “Spirit-filled father?” Remember “Spirit-filled” does not refer to emotional highs or “spooky” mystical religious experiences. The Spirit-filled father is the father who is a member of the Church the Body of Christ. If a Christian man wants to be Spirit-filled, he needs to be submissive to the Holy Spirit’s working within him. Once he has an intelligent understanding of what God’s Word says regarding fatherhood, the Christian father can place his faith in that sound doctrine, and the indwelling Holy Spirit will cause His Word to “work effectually” in that man.

God has designed the home to be managed in a very particular way. In Ephesians 5:23, Paul makes the analogy that just as “Christ is the head of the church, the husband is the head of the wife.” The Lord has appointed the father and husband to be the spiritual leader of the household. It is primarily the father’s responsibility to keep the family together, to provide for the family’s needs, and to ensure the family’s safety (both spiritual and physical).

Although the wife is called alongside to help the husband, it is primarily the husband’s responsibility to teach the children sound doctrine. Look at what the Apostle Paul wrote in Ephesians 6:4 KJV: “And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.” Colossians 3:21 KJV declares, “Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged.”

Spirit-filled fathers will not verbally and physically abuse their children. Rather, they will nurture and admonish (warn) his kids in love and decency, just as God the Father instructs us in loving care. A father should discipline his children (and this includes physical discipline), but not to the extent where the children feel discouragement and anger.

Although not directly written about fathers, these verses apply to older men within the local church. Titus 2:1,2 KJV: “But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine: that the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience.” Notice that word “become.” The testimony of the Christian father will take time to grow, and he will fail at times, but his life will better reflect sound doctrine as time goes on.

The Spirit-filled father will…

  • Be “sober” (have a sound mind, free of drugs, alcohol, and other mind-altering substances)
  • Be “grave” (honest, serious)
  • Be “temperate” (exercising moderation, self-control)
  • Be “sound in faith, in charity, in patience” (upright in actions, loving, a man who has a good understanding of the Scriptures, firm yet not harsh and tyrannical, etc)

Titus, which may have been the same age as Timothy (40?), was instructed to be an example to the young men in Crete. Paul writes in Titus 2:7,8 KJV: “In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine, shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.”

Notice, Titus was to be a “pattern of good works” in the following aspects:

  • “in doctrine,” meaning he was preaching, believing, and practicing sound doctrine
  • “shewing uncorruptness,” or proving what is holy, righteous, and godly
  • “gravity;” that is, worthy of honor, esteem, dignity
  • “sincerity,” or one that is genuine; as opposed to a hypocrite or phony
  • “sound speech, that cannot be condemned,” or a person’s language will reflect good, pure, and solid Bible doctrine; obviously, he will not use obscene language.
  • “that he that is of the contrary part be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you” means just what it says. If a Christian is living like a Christian, practicing what he or she preaches, then the lost world cannot accuse that Christian of being a hypocrite.

It is important that the Spirit-filled father keep a sound Christian testimony. He needs to set an example for his children, especially his sons. His actions will be passed down to his sons, and hopefully they will do the same with their sons.

After considering all this, the Christian life seems impossible for a husband and father. Let me tell you, no man on earth can lead this life that God’s righteousness demands. But, the Christian man is never called to lead the Christian life—he is merely called to let Christ live His life in and through him as he believes God’s Word!

In conclusion, I can say that the Lord has blessed me with a Spirit-filled father. Dad was not perfect, but he made sure my family was never homeless or hungry. Remember, God is not looking for a sinless father… He is just looking for a Spirit-filled father!

“As ye know how we exhorted and comforted and charged every one of you, as a father doth his children,…” (1 Thessalonians 2:11 KJV).

The Greatest Hero (Christ Did It for Us)

May 30, 2010

by Shawn Brasseaux

In its 6,000 years of existence, our world and its peoples have seen countless wars. From world wars to wars within nations, they all have one common cause: sin (James 4:1,2). Did you know that over 65 million people died in World War II? No other war in human history took so many lives. Sin not only kills us in physical wars, but it kills us spiritually too!

On Memorial Day, we remember the sacrifice of those that lost limbs, lost loved ones, or even lost their own lives. Here in America, we enjoy the freedom that so many men and women died to obtain for us (although these liberties are currently threatened)! But, did you know that there is an invisible battle being fought today? It is the battle of good and evil. This war is not fought with carnal, physical weapons (2 Corinthians 10:3-5). God and Satan are at war today, the truth program and the lie program, respectively (Ephesians 6:11-18).

In this Bible study, we want to examine this battle between good and evil, and the Hero who will win it!

* * *

Jesus Christ hung on Calvary’s cross, bones protruding, spit on His face, bloody and battered. The cross was awful, but Christ did it for us! As Jesus’ breaths became shallower, Satan jumps for joy! But, Christ smiled from the cross, saying, “Satan, I have defeated you at your own game of craftiness!” “For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness” (1 Corinthians 3:19). God kept a secret, and not even Satan figured it out. Satan, originally thinking he defeated Christ, finally learned the secret… but it was too late by that time. Had Satan really understood all the things that Calvary would bring about, Satan would have never allowed Christ to be killed!

The Apostle Paul declares, “But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory: which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory” (1 Corinthians 2:7,8 KJV).

Now, because the crosswork of Christ is done, and it never will be repeated, we can look at it from the Pauline perspective, and how exciting it is! Read Romans 6:3,4,10,11 KJV, and keep in mind this is not water baptism:

“3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life….
10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.
11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

In Colossians 2:9-15 KJV, we read a companion passage:

“9 For in [Christ] dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.
10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:
11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:
12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.
13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;
14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;
15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.”

All the power of the Godhead is found in the Lord Jesus Christ, so as members of the Church the Body of Christ, we are “complete in [Christ].” We lack nothing in Christ—everything that God can give you, He already gave it to you when your trusted Christ as your personal Saviour.

Our old sin nature has been circumcised (cut off) and put to death by God (Romans 6:6). When Christ died, we died; when He rose again the third day, we rose again to “walk in newness of life” (Romans 6:4). The Lord Jesus nailed the Mosaic Law to His cross, and He has already forgiven us of all our sins. In 2 Corinthians 5:17, we read: “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things have passed away; behold, all things are become new.” We have been “quickened [made alive] together with [Christ].” Our old sinful identity in Adam has been replaced by this new identity in Christ Jesus. We are no longer hell-bound sinners! This is the victory the Lord Jesus Christ has won… for us!

Galatians 3:13,14 KJV explain it like this: “Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: that the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.”

The Mosaic Law condemned even the best of us. It cursed us because we could not live up to its righteous expectations (Galatians 3:10). Sinners always fall “short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). But, God the Father made God the Son (Jesus Christ) “to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him” (2 Corinthians 5:21 KJV). Christ has rescued us from the devil’s slave market of sin, and Christ’s finished work on Calvary has broken the devil’s power of death (Hebrews 2:14).

“…Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures” (1 Corinthians 15:3,4). When we believe the Gospel of Grace, our old sin nature dies with Christ on Calvary’s cross, and we get a new life…His life. The life of Christ is the only life that produces true good works, the only works that God can and will accept.

Go with me to 1 Corinthians 15:57-58 KJV: “But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.”

Notice where our victory lies: not in ourselves, and not in our own efforts because we are too weak in these sinful, mortal bodies. Our victory lies in the finished work of Jesus Christ on Calvary! What we could not do, even on our best day, Christ came and did it for us simply because He loved us. He kept the Law, perfectly, to take it out of the way. Remember, it was because of His grace that He did it for us! Now, the perfect life of Jesus Christ can live in our lives when we take His Word by faith. We do not have to be defeated by sin, guilt, and self-pity.

Consider Hebrews 9:11,12 KJV: “But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building; neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.”

In Exodus, if you recall, Moses built a tabernacle: God showed Moses the plan of the tabernacle in heaven, and God wanted Moses to build an earthly tabernacle just like it (Hebrews 8:5). This “tent,” as it were, was the place where JEHOVAH would come down and live in Israel’s midst. The tabernacle, later replaced by the Temple, was the focal point of Judaism. Each year, in the Old Testament Israeli economy, the high priest would sprinkle animal blood on the Mercy Seat, the lid of the Ark of the Covenant, to pay for his sins and the sins of Israel. But, animal blood could only provide a temporary atonement, and that blood had to be offered every year (Hebrews 9:6-9).

When Christ went to Calvary’s cross, He shed His blood, sinless and divine, to pay for our sins. When He went to His Father in Matthew 20:17, Jesus Christ went to the tabernacle in the third heaven and offered His own blood. His blood, unlike the blood of animals, took away sin forever, and now we have eternal redemption in Christ.

Until Satan is confined to his eternal prison, the lake of fire, he still runs free today as “the god of this world,” suppressing the Gospel of Grace using religious tradition (2 Corinthians 4:3,4). The devil does not want this information to spread, so he keeps lost people under his thumb, blinded from the liberty, salvation, peace, and joy found in Christ and His finished crosswork on Calvary! We as members of the Church the Body of Christ are no longer slaves of sin and Satan. We were sinners who were part of the rebellion against God. Today, we are saints of the Most High, living for God’s glory and zealous of good works. The Lord Jesus Christ went to Calvary’s cross for every person’s benefit, knowing that nearly everyone would disregard His efforts. Very few people will truly appreciate His grace and love, but He suffered for us anyway!

I never want to diminish the selflessness and the courage our veterans demonstrated: I am greatly appreciative and I thank them. However, if mortal men and women deserve honor and praise such as this, do you not think that the Lord Jesus Christ deserves more honor and praise? After all, when Christ went to the cross, He fought to save your spiritual body (soul), not just your physical body! Christ wanted you to enjoy spiritual freedom, and He is the only Person capable of providing that freedom. He wanted to set you free from the awful penalty of eternal hellfire!

The Greatest Hero died, but He lives evermore! Veterans who have since passed on are unable to hear us say “Thank you!” The Lord Jesus Christ is not dead, He is alive. He is able to hear your appreciation, and He is able to see it in your heart! THANK YOU LORD FOR YOUR SACRIFICE!

“6 [Christ] Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:
7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:
8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
(Philippians 2:6-11 KJV).

The humble Jesus Christ of Nazareth died for you out of obedience to God His Father. Now, God the Father has placed God the Son above all things. One day, every creature will bow in reverence to Jesus Christ, confessing Him as Lord, to the glory of God the Father! Indeed, Christ is the GREATEST HERO!

“For God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8 KJV).

2 Timothy 2:15 KJV

May 23, 2010

by Shawn Brasseaux

Who is your apostle? Have you ever heard of “the Dispensation of the Grace of God?” What is a “dispensation?” What does the expression “rightly dividing the word of truth” mean? Does your pastor ever make reference to “the revelation of the mystery” or “the Gospel of the Grace of God?”

The average church member in any denomination is either vaguely familiar or completely unfamiliar with these terms (which are Bible terms, by the way). Proper Bible study—let alone any Bible study—is rare these days, and this is especially true in many so-called “Bible-believing” churches too! Much of today’s “church” services consist of nearly an hour of “worship” followed by five minutes of reading Bible verses (“sermonettes”). How can we Christians oppose Satan’s evil world system if we do not know even how to use our weapon, “the sword of the Spirit,” God’s Word (Ephesians 6:17)?

Most church members have several Bibles at home, but the devil is unthreatened. Why? Oftentimes, people are too confused about the Bible to read and enjoy it, so they are not inclined to read or believe it anyway. Satan’s primary tool for confusing mankind—especially the Church the Body of Christ—is religious tradition (“denominationalism”). Traditionally, most churches refuse to use the Bible God’s way. They wrest (twist) the Bible’s passages, forcing God’s Word to agree with their denominational biases instead of allowing the Bible to say what it says where it says it.

All of the confusion that religion causes can be dispelled using Pauline dispensationalism—proper Bible study, studying the Bible as God designed it to be studied. Not surprisingly, religion will do everything possible to keep you from learning the truths of God’s Word, so that you do what they want you to do to further their church program and doctrine. Consequently, they will also discourage you from believing the rightly divided Bible and forbid you from using Pauline dispensationalism. Do not let them fool you!

Please memorize 2 Timothy 2:15 as it appears in the King James Bible: “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” Tragically, modern English Bibles have omitted the words “study” and “rightly dividing.” Because these “Bibles” are more “popular” than the King James Bible, most church members are never instructed to study the Bible, nor are they told to rightly divide the Bible.

Brethren, it does matter what Bible translation you use. If the “Bible” you use does not tell you to “study” it and “rightly divide” it, then that “Bible” is in error—it cannot and is not God’s inerrant and infallible Word. Toss out that modern Bible and only use the Authorized Version King James Bible, God’s perfectly preserved Word for us English-speaking people.

So, have you ever read or seen 2 Timothy 2:15 anywhere? In a church bulletin? What about a ministry newsletter? Perhaps, a Bible study group? Or, a devotion? Maybe a pastor’s sermon? Chances are, you have never seen it or heard it. If this verse is so important, why has no one told you about it?

Well, most “Christian” churches today do not care to teach and preach God’s Word, God’s way. They just want to circulate their denominational doctrine (their biased theological system). Most church members have no idea that 2 Timothy 2:15 is even in the Bible! Many people who do discover this verse pretend it is not there because they dislike what it teaches. Again, they prefer their denominational tradition, and what did the Lord Jesus Christ said to the religious leaders of His day? “Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition” (Mark 7:9).

To repeat for the sake of emphasis, the solution to the abounding confusion in Christendom is to listen to God’s instructions: 2 Timothy 2:15 KJV. Man’s disobedience has led to sin and death, and now it has also led to confusion in regards to Bible study and understanding. People are misusing God’s Word, and have made the Bible a confusing mish-mash of doctrines. This is exactly what Satan wants, for “God is not the author of confusion” (1 Corinthians 14:33). If you want to be “approved unto God,” and if you want to be “a workman that needeth not to be ashamed,” you must “rightly divide the word of truth.” Now that I have your attention, you are probably asking what exactly does it mean to “rightly divide the word of truth?” I am glad you asked!

If God wants to change His mode of operation, He can, without seeking wisdom or authority from an outside source. God’s essence, His nature, never changes (Malachi 3:6; Hebrews 13:8), but His dealings with mankind have changed throughout human history because man has changed. For instance, the nation Israel was once God’s favored nation (Exodus 19:3-6; Deuteronomy 4:20). Today, God has temporarily set wicked Israel aside while He deals with the whole world, the Gentiles (Romans 10:1-3; Romans 11:11,12,15,25-32).

A second example is that once mankind fell into sin, God brought in the curse and banished Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden. Why do God’s dealings with man change? Again, mankind changes, so in order to accommodate these changes in man, God’s method of dealing with mankind must also change. This is why some books of the Bible “contradict” other portions of Scripture. God gave diverse directions to various people at sundry times, so we would do well if we did not pretend as though every verse in the Bible was spoken to us (which is what Christendom wrongly believes, even today).

Again, 2 Timothy 2:15 KJV says: “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” Notice that God’s Word is “the word of truth” (see John 17:17; cf. Daniel 10:21). All of the Bible is true, but certain portions are not true for everyone. All of the Bible is true, but it is not all true today. That is, one set of Bible directions is true for one group of people, but it is not true for another group of people (these people have a set of directions that are true for them). For instance, is a global flood threatening us today, such as in the days of Noah? No, but that was true in Noah’s day! Again, throughout human history, God gave diverse directions to various people at sundry times. In their respective places, these directions are true and good, but they are not true and good if they are applied to the wrong time period.

What is a dispensation? A dispensation is simply a set of instructions which God reveals to man limited information, how God deals with mankind in a particular way at a particular time. The word “dispensation” appears four times in the King James Bible (1 Corinthians 9:17; Ephesians 1:10; Ephesians 3:2; Colossians 1:25). Every dispensation has its own unique set of directions, so when you combine the dispensations—that is, confuse the information revealed in one dispensation with information given in another dispensation, or forcing directions into a dispensation in which it was never given—then you will destroy the clarity of God’s Word. (This is the very cause of Bible confusion today!)

THE TWO PROGRAMS OF GOD’S WORD

The first verse of the Bible, Genesis 1:1, clearly says, “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” The two spheres of God’s influence are the heaven and the earth. It is extremely important that we keep these two realms separate from one another.

Israel is God’s earthly people (Genesis 12:1-3; Genesis 24:7; Genesis 26:15; Exodus 19:5,6; etc.), whereas the Church the Body of Christ is God’s heavenly people (2 Corinthians 5:1; Ephesians 1:3; Ephesians 2:6,7; Colossians 1:5; etc.). God has a special plan for Israel (the prophetic program) that is separate and distinct from His special plan for the Church the Body of Christ (the mystery program). That is, one portion of the Bible is focused on the heaven (and the Body of Christ), while the other portion of God’s Word is centered on the earth (and the nation Israel).

Consider this. The Apostle Peter says that he is preaching that “which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began(Acts 3:21)—this is the prophetic program. But, the Apostle Paul writes that he is preaching “according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began, but now is made manifest…” (Romans 16:25,26a)—this is the mystery (secret) program. These programs cannot be one and the same (they are not to be confused, as they are commonly muddled up in today’s “Christian” circles).

Dispensational Bible study (also known as Pauline dispensationalism* or mid-Acts dispensationalism*) is a threat to the traditional preaching and teaching found in most “Bible-believing” churches because religion confuses Israel with the Church the Body of Christ and it combines Israel’s prophetic program with our mystery program. People haphazardly take verses that belong to the nation Israel and/or pretend that we are “spiritual Israel” and apply those verses to us. This is dangerous and dishonest because we are taking something that God never gave us. Faith is believing what God says to us, so if we are to have faith, we need to know what God said to us. It is not faith to believe and do something God never told us to believe or do.

I am well aware that most of the preaching in Christendom today comes from the Four Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. While the Four Gospels are God’s Word, they are God’s Word to Israel. According to the Bible, Jesus Christ’s earthly ministry was to Israel only. The Lord Jesus declared, “I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel” (Matthew 15:24). “Salvation is of the Jews,” Jesus stated in John 4:22. Paul writes that Jesus “was a minister of the circumcision [Israel] for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers:” (Romans 15:8). Jesus sent His twelve apostles to Israel only (Matthew 10:5-7).

If Jesus’ earthly ministry was to Jews only, then how can we Gentiles follow Matthew through John and expect to be following God’s will for us? We would be following the directions Jesus gave to Israel. We are not Israel, so why obey the instructions God gave to Israel? It makes no sense. The instructions God gave to Israel are not the instructions He has given us. Please understand that you can follow the Bible and the quote the Bible all you want, but if you ignore the distinctions God has made in His Word, you will be outside of the will of God. Right division (dispensational Bible study) is that critical to your understanding the Bible!

UNDERSTANDING WHO YOUR APOSTLE IS

Just as God the Father sent Jesus Christ to minister to the Jews, God also sent one man to minister to us non-Jews (Gentiles). This is why the Apostle Paul wrote: “For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles; I magnify mine office” (Romans 11:13; Romans 15:16; 2 Timothy 1:11). God’s spokesman to us today is the Apostle Paul. If you want to know what God has to say to you today, go to Paul’s epistles, Romans through Philemon. The Holy Spirit led Paul to write, “If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord” (1 Corinthians 14:37 KJV). Just as God used Moses to teach Israel His law, God uses the Apostle Paul to teach us His grace! But, prior to Paul’s salvation, things were quite different regarding God’s dealings with man.

After mankind fell into sin back in Genesis chapter 3, God promised a Redeemer, a Saviour, “the seed of the woman” (verse 15). During the next 2000 years, mankind was still rebellious and wicked—how was this Redeemer going to born of men when mankind was refusing to cooperate with God? Well, finally, God set aside one man, Abraham, and He promised that, through Abraham’s son Isaac, a new nation of people, Israel, would be born (Genesis 12:1-3). God would use then use Israel to give birth to the Saviour-King, the Lord Jesus Christ. When Jesus Christ would set up His kingdom in the earth, Israel would evangelize the Gentiles (Exodus 19:5,6; Isaiah 60:1-3; Zechariah 9:20-23; et al.).

However, when Israel’s Messiah, Jesus, came and claimed to be their King, they demanded the Roman government carry out His crucifixion; albeit God raised Him from the dead (Acts 2:22-39; Acts 3:12-26). So, in the early part of the book of Acts, Israel is still mostly rejecting Peter and the other apostles’ preaching. The Jews later killed their prophet Stephen in Acts chapter 7.

Just as God’s wrath was about to be poured out in Acts 7:54-56 (cf. Psalm 110:1; Psalm 68:1), there was a dispensational change. Now that the Jews had rejected God the Father (by letting Herod behead John the Baptist; John 1:6), rejected God the Son, Jesus Christ, by demanding His crucifixion (John 19:15), and rejected the Holy Spirit (who was ministering to them through the twelve apostles in early Acts [Hebrews 2:4,5]), God would turn to the Gentiles without Israel. Israel had blasphemed against the Holy Ghost—she had committed the “unpardonable sin” of Matthew 12:31,32. Israel’s kingdom would now be postponed indefinitely while God would deal with the non-Jews.

Ephesians 2:11,12 KJV talks about the when God made the distinction between the nation Israel (“Circumcision”) and the Gentiles (“Uncircumcision”): “Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands; that at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:”

This is what the Bible calls “time past,” and would include the “Old Testament,” the Four Gospels, and the first nine chapters of Acts. But, verse 13 says, “But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.” Dispensational Bible study enables us to “rightly divide” the “time past” and the “but now.” Before Paul and the Dispensation of Grace (the “but now,”), God dealt with mankind on the basis on Jew and Gentile. Now, God is not making a distinction between Jew and Gentile. God has changed the program: this is the dispensational change that occurred with the conversion of the Apostle Paul.

Furthermore, the nation Israel, which God intended to use to evangelize the world, is currently set aside. Today, the Gentile (non-Jewish) world is hearing God’s Word through the ministry of the Apostle Paul, apart from Israel. Today, Israel’s prophetic program is temporarily suspended (note that it is not eternally suspended). Their kingdom is still postponed, for their Messiah has not yet returned at His Second Coming to bring in their kingdom.

Today, God’s salvation message to us is not, “Repent and be baptized” (Peter’s message to Israel in Acts 2:38), but rather “Christ died for our sins, He was buried, and He was raised again the third day” (Paul’s message to us Gentiles in 1 Corinthians 15:1-4, also known as “the Gospel of the Grace of God,” according to Acts 20:24).

We are not Jews living under the burdens of the Mosaic Law. Rather, we are Gentiles living in the “Dispensation of the Grace of God” (Ephesians 3:2). If every church member would recognize the stark difference between Peter and the eleven’s ministry to Israel and the Apostle Paul’s ministry to us the Gentiles, many churches would be empty (the members would realize the preacher claiming to be teaching “God’s truth” was actually preaching “Satan’s error!”).

If preachers ever did come to understand that our apostle (Paul) forbade tithing, water baptism, and Sabbath Day keeping, most of them would keep it secret because they would lose funding! Law and grace are mutually exclusive, so keep them “rightly divided.” “Ye are not under the law, but under grace”  (Romans 6:14-15; Romans 11:6; Galatians 5:1-5).

Most Bible “scholars” and theologians try to place the birthday of the Church the Body of Christ, in Acts chapter 2 on the day of Pentecost. Scholars?! They can read Greek with ease, but they have difficulty understanding what the English Bible says—that Paul had a ministry separate from the twelve apostles. Only Paul writes about “the Church the Body of Christ,” so the Body of Christ is a Pauline doctrine (a doctrine revealed only to Paul; see Ephesians 3:1-9). Paul is not mentioned in the Bible until Acts chapter 9, so Acts chapter 2 is not the Body of Christ! Acts chapter 2, if you notice is still Jewish (Acts 2:14,22,36) while the Body of Christ has neither Jews nor Gentiles in it (Galatians 3:28).

* NOTE: The term Pauline dispensationalism means that we study and believe the Bible according to the ministry and doctrine committed to the Apostle Paul. You may also hear this referred to as mid-Acts dispensationalism, for the dispensational change that affects us occurred during the middle part of the book of Acts (Paul’s conversion in Acts chapter 9).

CONCLUSION

What right division IS:

  • It is separating our mystery program from Israel’s prophetic program.
  • It is separating the Church the Body of Christ from the nation Israel.
  • It is separating law and grace.
  • It is separating “time past,” “but now,” and “the ages to come.”
  • It is separating Paul’s apostleship from Peter’s apostleship.
  • It is separating the truths of God’s Word written to us (Paul’s epistles) from the truths of His Word written to others.

What right division is NOT:

  • It is not separating the Old and New Testaments.
  • It is not separating truth from error.
  • It is not throwing away or ignoring the non-Pauline books of the Bible.
  • It is not exalting the Apostle Paul as Saviour or God.
  • It is not chopping up the Bible.
  • It is not following traditional Bible study.

How to Handle Mark 16

May 16, 2010

by Shawn Brasseaux

This week, we will discuss a very controversial Bible passage in the last chapter of Mark. In modern English Bibles, oddly enough, immediately after Mark 16:8, you will see brackets, a solid bar, or maybe even a huge space, and then you will see verses 9-20. You will also notice an explanation like “the most reliable early manuscripts and other ancient witnesses do not have Mark 16:9-20.” This passage is so heavily misunderstood—and perhaps even hated—to the point where some scholars want us to believe these twelve verses were never in the autographs (original Bible manuscripts)!

Once and for all, let me assure you that Mark 16:9-20 is God-breathed, and that those verses were in the originals (which are no longer extant/in existence). Matthew, Luke, and John all conclude their books with the resurrection—why would Mark stop his book at verse 8, with Christ not appearing in His resurrected body? It makes no sense! Mark 16:9-20 belongs in the Bible, and anyone who removes those twelve verses will have to answer to a righteous and holy God one day for corrupting His Word.

Let me also say that the two “most reliable early manuscripts” to which the footnote refers is actually Codices Vaticanus (B) and Sinaiticus (Aleph)—the most unreliable manuscripts because they are riddled with errors and corrections. About 620 manuscripts contain the Gospel of Mark, and only two—B and Aleph—omit Mark 16:9-20. Dean John William Burgon cites several “church fathers” who quoted this passage, and some of these witnesses—such as Irenaeus and Hippolytus—existed before Aleph and B! The Syrian Peshitta and Old Latin Vulgate (~A.D. 150) contained those verses, predating Aleph and B by 200 years!

With that now settled and Mark 16:9-20 vindicated, we can now move on to a Bible study examining Mark 16:15-20. We will look at each verse individually, comment briefly on each, and then sum it all up at the end.

For now, look at Mark 16:15: “And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” You usually hear this verse with Matthew 28:19 (“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:”). Here, the Lord Jesus has told His eleven apostles (Judas now deceased) to preach the gospel to every creature. Everyone in the evangelical community loves this verse, but it has absolutely nothing to do with us today! Why?

The “gospel” to which Jesus referred is “the Gospel of the Kingdom” (see Matthew 9:35; Matthew 24:14). Today, we are not simply proclaiming Jesus as Israel’s King and Messiah, we are preaching the Gospel of Grace—Paul’s Gospel that “Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again the third day” (1 Corinthians 15:1-4). Although we are called to witness to the lost, we cannot follow Mark 16:15. Leave it where it belongs; it belongs in Israel’s prophetic program.

Mark 16:16 can be highly popular with some, but very confusing for others. It reads, “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.” Right off the bat, you see this verse says water baptism is necessary for salvation. Understand this verse has nothing to do with us today—this is Israel’s program. Moments ago, we discussed the Gospel of the Kingdom. If a Jew wanted to receive salvation, he/she had to repent, place his/her faith in Jesus as the Messiah, and then get water baptized (Matthew 3:1-6; Acts 2:36-38; Acts 8:37,38). Any Jew that refused that symbolic washing would be killed in the wrath of the Tribulation for their unbelief. Today, we are in the Dispensation of Grace and in the Body of Christ, separate from Israel. Mark 16:16 is true, but it is true for Israel. It is not true for us today because our one baptism is not water (1 Corinthians 1:17, 12:13; Ephesians 4:5). Water baptism does not belong in our dispensation; Mark 16:16 has nothing to do with us.

We move on to Mark 16:17: “And these signs shall follow them that believe; in my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;” Like the previous verse, some enjoy “practicing” this verse and the rest ignore it because they do not understand it. (Again, this is a failure to rightly divide the word of truth!) Casting out devils was very prevalent during Christ’s earthly ministry. Satan tried to render Israel useless by possessing the Jews with his devils. If Jews were possessed by the devil, God would be unable to utilize them as priests in the kingdom. Christ was casting out devils to make way for His kingdom (for example, Mark 5:1-13). Peter and the apostles continued to cast out unclean spirits in Acts 5:15-16.

Mark 16:17 is the only time the Lord Jesus Christ ever spoke about the gift of tongues. The modern tongue-talkers like to use this verse, but it has nothing to do with us either. Let me repeat: this is Israel’s program. The believing Jews needed the gift of tongues in Acts chapter 2 in order to convert Jews from other nations. Jews that were scattered into other nations would come to Jerusalem for the Feast of Pentecost, but they did not speak Aramaic or Hebrew, for instance—they spoke the language of a foreign nation. This gift of intelligent human languages enabled the apostles to speak the Gospel of the Kingdom to fellow Jews who spoke various dialects (see Acts 2:7-11).

Here is Mark 16:18. “They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.” My, this is a verse that really gets people moving. Some of them feel the urge to perform healing and handle snakes, and the rest of the crowd feels like evacuating the building! There are churches that are known for snake handling and/or healing miracles, and here is one of their primary verses (also James 5:15). For some reason, no one that I know of ever follows the part of the verse that speaks of drinking deadly poisons. Like so many times before, I will repeat it: this verse belongs with Israel, not us.

Mark concludes his book with the last two verses (19 and 20): “So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God. And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the signs following. Amen.” This tells us that verses 15-18 occurred during the forty days after the resurrection and before His ascension (Acts 1:3). And yes, the apostles did perform miracles as signs in the early part of the book of Acts, just as the Lord Jesus Christ said they would (Hebrews 2:3,4; cf. Luke 24:49; Hebrews 6:4-6).

Okay, so, what does all of this mean? When did the apostles ever drink poisons or handle snakes? Why is there a need for these types of miracles? Remember, Israel’s prophetic program was all that Israel’s apostles knew. They had no idea that God would set aside Israel for a time, and go to Gentile world through Paul without converted Israel (Isaiah 60:1-3 cf. Romans 11:11,12). They did not know of this 2,000-year period we understand as the “Dispensation of the Grace of God” (Ephesians 3:2). In their minds, the seven-year Tribulation would occur after the ascension, within their lifetimes. Now, the Word of God is complete with Paul’s epistles, and it tells us that the Tribulation is still future, even to us. God postponed Israel’s program, and interrupted it with the mystery (secret) program (Romans 16:25,26). God kept it secret from Israel.

MARK 16:15,16

The 144,000 Jewish men during the Tribulation will proclaim good news to the Gentiles. These Gentiles will have an opportunity to bless Israel by blessing these Jews (see Matthew 25:31-46). This is why, during the Tribulation, there are martyrs in heaven from every tongue, people, kindred, and tribe (Revelation 7:1-9). These verses also apply to the subsequent millennial reign of Christ, when Jews will be priests to the Gentiles, and Gentiles will flock to Jews for the Gospel of the Kingdom (Exodus 19:5,6; Isaiah 60:1-3; Zechariah 8:20-23; et al.).

MARK 16:17,18

The Lord God will bind Satan in the bottomless pit during the millennial (1000-year) reign of Christ (Revelation 20:1-3). All devils and evil spirits will be removed from earth after the Tribulation to make way for the kingdom (Zechariah 13:1,2). The speaking with new tongues relates to Mark 16:15, when the 144,000 will be able to instantly speak the world’s languages to convert the nations (Zechariah 8:20-23).

During the Tribulation, the animal kingdom will turn against mankind. Wild beasts will devour people, so the power to pick up serpents will be needed to protect the believers during the Tribulation (Revelation 6:8). Also during the Tribulation, a celestial body (meteorite?) will fall from heaven and poison one-third of the waters on earth (Revelation 8:10-11)—this is where the gift of drinking deadly poisons belongs! That special power will protect the Jewish believers from the poisoned waters.

The healing of the sick of Mark 16:18 parallels James 5:14-15, the power that will make earth ready for the kingdom, as there will be no sickness or death on earth during the millennial reign of Christ (Isaiah 33:24; Jeremiah 30:17).

CONCLUSION

I hope Mark chapter 16 makes more sense to you. When people come to those last few verses of Mark 16, they panic. They do not know how to handle the passage because it is so often misunderstood and wrested (corrupted). However, if we understand the passage does not apply to us, but rather to Israel, it makes perfect sense.

We do not need to cut those verses out of the Bible once we realize they are not for us. Mark 16:15-20 is true for Israel, which is why it will not work today for us. There are no miracle healings, speaking in tongues, and exorcism (see 1 Corinthians 13:8-13; 1 Timothy 5:23; 2 Timothy 4:20). God is doing something different today with a new agency separate from Israel, and it is the Church the Body of Christ! Right division is the key to understanding Mark 16:15-20; leave this passage in Israel’s program, where it belongs.

“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15 KJV).

Reader Applauds Franklin Graham

May 14, 2010

Published in
The (Opelousas, Louisiana) Daily World

I may not fully agree with everything that Mr. Franklin Graham believes, but I certainly applaud his determination to stand up for the truth of the Scriptures. Well done, brother. While numerous religions and denominations gathered in the Pentagon for prayer on May 6, Graham refused to participate inside. Good for him—the heretical, ecumenical movement seeks to unite all religions at the expense of sound doctrine.

It comes at no surprise that people attacked him for defending the Lord Jesus Christ. Kathleen Parker’s recent column on this issue was nonsense. The Bible promotes an exclusivist message: Jesus Christ is the only way to salvation (John 14:6; Acts 4:12; 1 Timothy 2:5). Anyone can disagree (free will), but ultimately, truth is not relative. Truth does not differ from person to person. There are some things in life that are absolute, and the Holy Scriptures in the King James Bible are authoritative and unprecedented. Refusing to believe God’s Word does not diminish its supremacy.

No thinking man can say, “all religions lead to the same God.” Some religions believe in several gods while others believe in one god; some do not even believe in a god at all! How can all the 4,000 world religions be correct, since they are all mutually exclusive? Non-Christians can promote their ideas, but as soon as a Christian quotes the Bible, they are called “bigoted.” This is utterly absurd! The fact is Jesus Christ came to “taste death for every man” (Hebrews 2:9). Everyone is being offered an opportunity for salvation through Christ.

Jesus Christ is the only person in human history who ever claimed to be God. Christ was more than a “good teacher” and more than a “prophet.” The Lord Jesus Christ was God manifested in human flesh. I want everyone to know that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose again (1 Corinthians 15:1-4). No one else demonstrated such love for you (Romans 5:6-8).

I do not hate non-Christians, because they are people that still deserve respect and love. However, I will never compromise sound doctrine for the sake of unity. It will never happen, and I make no apologies.

The Spirit-Filled Mother

May 9, 2010

by Shawn Brasseaux

Do you know what a “Spirit-filled mother” is? Remember, when the Bible speaks of being “filled with the Spirit,” it does not refer to instances of sudden emotional highs or loss of self-control. The Spirit-filled mother is a mother who is a member of the Church the Body of Christ. This type of mother is one that is submissive to the Holy Spirit working within her—notice the capital “S” on “Spirit-filled.” Once she grasps a firm understanding of what the Lord has called her to be, she can place her faith in that, and let God’s Word “work effectually” in her.

According to Titus 2:3-5 KJV, the Spirit-filled mother will do the same thing that aged women do in the local church. She will…

  • Lead a life that “becometh holiness”—notice the word “becometh”: her testimony will take time to grow, and she will make mistakes, but her actions will better reflect sound doctrine as time passes.
  • Not gossip or lie in order to attack the reputations of others.
  • Not be a drunkard, nor does she allow herself to be controlled by things that will affect the soundness of her mind.
  • Will teach her children “good things,” “good” being sound doctrine from God’s Word, as opposed to the world’s standard of “good.”
  • Will teach her daughters to keep a sound/clear mind, to love their own husbands and their children, to be “discreet” (cautious, separate, responsible), to be “chaste” (not lewd/vulgar in apparel and actions), to be “keepers at home” (her main responsibilities are at home), to be “good” (acceptable to God), and to be “obedient to their own husbands” (acknowledging the husband is the head of the household).

Why should Christian mothers do this—does it really matter? Yes, it does matter!! Titus 2:5 KJV ends with “…that the word of God be not blasphemed.” If the Christian mother is doing her best to fulfill her God-given duties (as listed above), the unbelieving world will not be able to speak evil of her lifestyle. She claims to be a Christian, and her actions prove it. She will not be giving the Lord a bad name; rather, He will be receiving the glory and honor. The Spirit-filled mother will train her children, especially her daughters, in the ways of the Lord. The daughters, when grown and married, will continue the cycle and teach their own daughters what their mother taught them.

You may say, “This is all well and good, but no woman can live to such high standards.” To which I would respond, “You are correct. No woman can adequately live this life! The woman must allow Christ to live His life in her! Only Christ can lead the sinless life.” If we would just listen to the Lord, our lives would be so much better off. If you are a young woman, consider what the Lord says about motherhood. What better advice can you get!

In closing, let me say that the Lord has blessed me with a Spirit-filled mother. Sure, she made mistakes, but she led me to the Lord when I was a small child. I learned basic Bible doctrine from her all those years ago, too. As my own mom understands, God is not looking for a sinless mother…He is just looking for a Spirit-filled mother!

“[The virtuous woman] looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her” (Proverbs 31:27-28 KJV).

When the Saints Sin

April 25, 2010

by Shawn Brasseaux

How should Christians handle sin? What are we to do when tempted to sin? After we do something wrong, should we confess to God (or a priest) in order to get God’s forgiveness? These are the questions we want to consider in this week’s Bible study.

Just recently, a woman who professes Christ told me she no longer sins. As I talked with her, she explained to me that it was “her flesh” that sinned. She, on the other hand, did not sin. (?) What is equally absurd is when others avoid taking responsibility for their actions by saying “the devil made me do it.” No one wants to be held accountable for evil things they do; they blame the devil or “their flesh” for their sin, but their prideful attitude refuses to acknowledge they sin. (Tell me if I am wrong, but is not lying a sin?)

So, what should we do when we sin (and yes, we Christians sin too!)? Ask the common professing Christian, and immediately they mention 1 John 1:9 KJV: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” As the saying goes in religion: “Keep short sin accounts, or God is going to judge you for any unconfessed sin!” Years ago, I went to a church where that was taught. But, what if I told you that the true meaning of 1 John 1:9 had nothing at all to do with “short sin accounts?”

We need to apply the principle of “right division” (dispensational Bible study). The epistle of 1 John is written by the Apostle John, one of the twelve men the Lord sent to the nation Israel (Matthew 10:5-7; Galatians 2:9). John is an apostle of Israel; he had no ministry to the Body of Christ or to the Gentiles. Whatever John writes is not directed to us in this the Dispensation of Grace. He is writing to Israel. My first point is that 1 John 1:9 has absolutely nothing to do with anyone today. It was for the Jews of time past.

The second point I want to make in regards to 1 John 1:9 is that it is not written to Jewish believers. It is written to Jewish unbelievers. Compare the verse with Matthew 3:6: “And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.” If a Jew wanted to receive salvation in that kingdom program/economy, one of the requirements was he or she had to confess his or her sins. John is writing this verse for the benefit of those Jews who are not saved (those Jews that have not yet embraced Jesus of Nazareth as their Messiah/King). They were to confess their sin of breaking God’s Old Covenant (see Leviticus 26:40-42; 1 Kings 8:33-35; 2 Chronicles 6:24-27; 2 Chronicles 30:22; Ezra 9:10-15; Ezra 10:1; Nehemiah 1:4-11; Nehemiah 9:1-3; Daniel 9:3-20).

Now that we have dispelled the myth of religion’s “short sin accounts,” it is tantamount for us to look into the Scriptures to see what verses are written to us as members of the Church the Body of Christ. Israel and her prophetic program are currently suspended. Paul is God’s spokesman to non-Jews; he is our apostle (Romans 11:13; Romans 15:16; 2 Timothy 1:11). If we want to understand what we should do when we are confronted with sin, or what we should do after we sin, we need to see what Paul writes. In the Pauline epistles alone we find what God says to us today as members of the Body of Christ living in this the Dispensation of Grace.

Five times, Paul writes that God the Father has already forgiven (past tense) us our sins for Christ’s sake. We are not worthy of forgiveness because of our good deeds, but we are forgiven because the Lord Jesus died and shed His blood for us!

  • Ephesians 1:7 KJV: “In whom [the Lord Jesus Christ] we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;”
  • Ephesians 4:32 KJV: “And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.”
  • Colossians 1:14 KJV: “In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:”
  • Colossians 2:13 KJV: “And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;”
  • Colossians 3:13 KJV: “Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.”

If we are already forgiven in Christ, and we are, then there is no reason to practice 1 John 1:9. Do not let religion convince you that you need to do something to gain forgiveness or that you need to get in right standing with God. Jesus Christ already did everything needed for your forgiveness—you play no role whatsoever in your forgiveness! You have nothing to confess (to a priest or to God), because you are under the blood of Christ: your relationship with God solely depends of Jesus Christ’s finished work on Calvary. Understand that 1 John 1:9 has nothing to do with us. Remember also that grace is not license to sin (Romans 6:1,2).

Now, what about repentance? We hear religionists scream about repentance (or its variation “penance” or “penitence”). The Protestant doctrine “penitence” means, “to feel sorry for one’s sins.” The Roman Catholic sacrament of “penance,” or “suffering/paying for your sins,” is also found in religion. Neither the Protestant nor the Catholic view is correct. Biblical repentance is “a change in mind”—Biblical repentance is not penance or penitence.

When a Christian is confronted with the option to sin, or has already sinned, he or she needs to repent. Please keep in mind when I say, “repent,” I am referring to God’s definition of repentance—not some religious definition. Paul defines repentance in two places. First, Romans 12:2 KJV: “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” And Ephesians 4:23 KJV: “And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;”

We sin because we are sinners. Negative thoughts/bad thinking processes will result in sin. Our natural minds are corrupt, so we need an outside source on which to think. If we dwell on the things that are listed in Philippians 4:8, this will build sound doctrine in our inner man: “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”

If we genuinely place our faith in Galatians 5:24,25 KJV, we will walk in the Spirit: “And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.” As long as we place our faith in verses such as those two, we will not sin (Galatians 5:16). We sin whenever we allow the old man, the sin nature, to rule us. As long as we allow the Holy Spirit to accomplish His will in our inner man, we will not walk in the flesh and sin.

I am sure you are familiar with the “circus” going on in Corinth. These believers were acting worst than lost pagan Gentiles, so Paul had to write an epistle to admonish them. When we come to 2 Corinthians, some time has passed since the first letter, and Titus has since told Paul that the Corinthians repented. Turn to 2 Corinthians 7:8-11 KJV:

“8 For though I made you sorry with a letter, I do not repent, though I did repent: for I perceive that the same epistle hath made you sorry, though it were but for a season.
9 Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing.
10 For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.
11 For behold this selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you, yea, what clearing of yourselves, yea, what indignation, yea, what fear, yea, what vehement desire, yea, what zeal, yea, what revenge! In all things ye have approved yourselves to be clear in this matter.”

Notice these Corinthians had a godly sorrow.” This was not feeling sorry for their sins (worldly sorrow” that leads to “death”). It was not confessing their sins and then paying for their sins through self-denial (fasting, for instance). “Godly sorrow” will lead to God’s Word transforming your inner man as you place your faith in it! In the passage above, repentance will lead to salvation. Now, “salvation” here does not mean eternal salvation, because the Corinthians were already saved (1 Corinthians 1:1:6-10). This is referring to salvation from defeat, intense sorrow, and self-pity. The behavior of the Corinthians suddenly changed because they placed their faith in the letter Paul wrote to them regarding their behavior! This is Biblical repentance.

So, if you are a child of God today, and you are a member of the Body of Christ who has completely trusted in Paul’s Gospel of Grace (Christ Jesus crucified for your sins, buried, and raised again for your justification; 1 Corinthians 15:1-4)….

  • WHAT SHOULD YOU DO WHEN TEMPTED TO SIN? Stop, and contemplate on sound doctrine. Remember what you read in Galatians 5:24,25. Philippians 4:8 is another good verse to use. Thinking on and placing your faith in sound doctrine will allow the Holy Spirit to lead you to do right. When you begin to doubt what God said, you go back to the negative sinful thinking habits you have inherited from Adam, and then the sinful act begins. It seems impossible to resist sin, but you can do it with God’s help! Trust in the Lord.
  • WHAT SHOULD YOU DO AFTER YOU SIN? Do not practice 1 John 1:9. God has already forgiven you all trespasses. You have nothing to confess because Jesus Christ’s righteousness has been applied to your account. You are blameless in God’s eyes because you are in His Son. Remember, grace is not license to sin!! After you sin, you need to view the sin as God does: DO NOT BEAT YOURSELF UP. “Man, what a dumb move that was. This is exactly why God had to die for me! I need to let the Holy Spirit work in me; if I am to be an ambassador for Christ, I need to let Christ live His life in me. I am dead to sin, and alive unto God: my life needs to reflect the sound doctrine in God’s Word rightly divided.”

Understanding Paul’s Early Ministry

April 18, 2010

by Shawn Brasseaux

If you are a Berean Bible student who is familiar with right division (dispensational Bible study), you understand that Paul’s ministry is separate from Peter and the eleven’s ministry to the nation Israel. You know that Israel always wanted to see signs, miracles, and wonders before they would believe (John 4:48; 1 Corinthians 1:22); thus, the Lord Jesus Christ gave the twelve apostles of Israel the power to cast out devils, heal the sick, and raise the dead (Matthew 10:5-8; Mark 16:17-20). He also told them to go strictly to the nation Israel—Peter and the eleven had no ministry to Gentiles/non-Jews. However, when we come to the Apostle Paul, the Lord sends this one man to preach a new Gospel, the Gospel of the Grace of God, to the Gentiles (Romans 11:13; Romans 15:16; 2 Timothy 1:11).

The power to perform miracles was given to the twelve apostles because they were sent to Israel, yet Paul as the apostle of the Gentiles is performing miracles such as casting out devils and healing sickness and disease (Acts 15:12, Acts 19:11-12, Acts 28:8-9, and 2 Corinthians 12:12). Why is Paul doing this? A more difficult question to answer is why is Paul unable to heal sick bodies in 1 Timothy 5:23 and 2 Timothy 4:20?

Why did Paul write, “Christ sent me not to [water] baptize” in 1 Corinthians 1:17, yet in the previous verses of 14-16 he wrote that he did water baptize (see also Acts 18:8)? (For some time, this confused me.) Why did Paul speak with “tongues,” or languages he never formally learned, if he was sent to Gentiles (1 Corinthians 14:18)? After all, tongues was a spiritual gift for Israel (Mark 16:17; Acts 2:4).

Is the Bible contradicting itself? Those who hate mid-Acts (Pauline) dispensationalism will ask these questions in an attempt to discourage and trick you. Fortunately for us—and unfortunately for them!—these questions enhance our understanding and believing right division, not discredit it! God’s Word rightly divided is not in error, and hopefully you will understand the three reasons why Paul water baptized and performed miracles in the first place.

1. TO PROVOKE ISRAEL TO JEALOUSY

The book of Acts is a “transitional book;” to wit, God is in the process of temporarily suspending Israel’s prophetic program and the Dispensation of Grace—God’s dealings with the Gentile world through Paul’s ministry—is gradually being established. God did not set Israel aside overnight: it took several years.

Israel was guilty of rejecting and killing their Messiah-King, but God the Father has forgiven them (Luke 23:34). Although they stumbled, they did not fall (Romans 11:11a). So, as the book of Acts opens, God is giving the nation Israel a renewed opportunity for repentance—every Jew is commanded to repent and embrace this Jesus of Nazareth they rejected as their Lord, Christ, and King (Acts 2:36-38). The first eight chapters of Acts demonstrate God’s patience during the first year following the events of Calvary and Christ’s resurrection. The Holy Spirit is still speaking to Israel through the twelve apostles and the prophet Stephen, but most of Israel refuses (this is the unpardonable sin spoken of in Matthew 12:31-32). This cannot be forgiven, so God begins to set Israel aside as they murder Stephen in Acts chapter 7.

God is now going to turn to the Gentiles without Israel being entirely converted. Furthermore, the Lord will now provoke Israel to jealousy by giving Israel’s spiritual gifts to Gentiles. From the Jews’ perspective, those Gentiles were uncircumcised dogs—they ate unclean foods, worshipped false gods, and had poor hygiene. The Jews would most certainly get upset to see such people receive their gifts and have fellowship with their JEHOVAH (the name by which Israel knew the LORD God of the Bible). Look at Romans 11:11 KJV: “I say then, Have they [Israel] stumbled that they should fall? God forbid: but rather through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke them [Israel] to jealousy.”

In his first epistle to the Corinthians, the Apostle Paul wrote (1 Corinthians 14:21,22): “In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord. Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.”

This is a quote from Isaiah 28:11,12 and “this people” is the nation Israel. The gift of tongues given to early Gentile believers was God’s way of speaking to the nation Israel (it was a sign), which for the most part was still in unbelief. At the time of Paul, the Lord had been dealing with Israel for 2,000 years (since Abraham)—Israel was being rebellious and mostly stayed in unbelief, so God was showing them He was now turning to the Gentiles despite the Jews’ disobedience. This was God’s judgment on them for blaspheming against the Holy Spirit in the first eight chapters of Acts.

2. TO DEMONSTRATE PROGRESSIVE REVELATION

The second reason why Paul did what he did was to demonstrate progressive revelation. Prior to his salvation, Paul was a Pharisee (Jewish religious leader; Philippians 3:3-8). He knew the Old Testament: the washing of the Levitical priests and the parting of the Red Sea, for instance. Considering Paul’s Jewish heritage, and the dispensation in which he grew up, he and the rest of Israel were accustomed to miracles. Moreover, immediately after his conversion, Paul was also water baptized (Acts 9:18). Eventually, the Lord revealed to Paul that water baptism was no longer necessary, and that water baptism was divisive and should be avoided (1 Corinthians 1:12-16). Gentiles would have no need for Israel’s water baptism; today, the Holy Spirit supernaturally performs the only baptism that counts when He places a believer into the Body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:13; Ephesians 4:5).

“The revelation of the mystery” (the Body of Christ, the rapture, temporal fall of Israel, Gospel of Grace, Gentiles saved by faith apart from the Mosaic Law, et cetera) was gradually revealed to Paul. This is why Paul could honestly write, “for we know in part, and we prophesy in part” (1 Corinthians 13:8-12). There were some things Paul did not know at that time because God’s Word was not completely written down—we call this “progressive revelation.”

In Acts 26:16 KJV, Paul repeats to King Agrippa what Christ told him shortly after his conversion near Damascus: “But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee;” The Lord was going to appear to Paul in the future, to reveal more information to him when the time came (cf. 2 Corinthians 12:1).

Now that we have the completed and preserved Word of God, the King James Bible, we no longer need signs, miracles, wonders, prophesying, and tongues (1 Corinthians 13:8-13). We have the revealed Word of God; there is no longer any need for prophets, apostles, angelic appearances, and so on. Everything that the Lord has to say is in the Bible, written and preserved forever (2 Timothy 3:15-17)! Read it.

3. TO VALIDATE PAUL’S APOSTLESHIP

A third reason why Paul performed miracles was to validate his apostleship. Just like the Lord Jesus Christ performed miracles in order to prove to Israel that He was their promised Messiah-King, the Holy Spirit empowered Paul to perform miracles so that his apostleship would be proven as legitimate and God-ordained.

While Paul mentions his miracle working in Romans 15:18,19, I want you to see what he wrote in 2 Corinthians 12:11,12 KJV: “I am become a fool in glorying; ye have compelled me: for I ought to have been commended of you: for in nothing am I behind the very chiefest apostles, though I be nothing. Truly the signs of an apostle were wrought among you in all patience, in signs, and wonders, and mighty deeds.”

Do not accuse Paul of being arrogant or egotistical. Those two verses are God’s inspired, infallible Word. The Holy Spirit is commending Paul—this is not Paul bragging. During his ministry, Paul faced much opposition, especially from his fellow kinsman the Jews (1 Thessalonians 2:14-16). People would belittle Paul, claiming that he never spent three years with Christ like Peter and the eleven. We hear the same thing about Paul today from people who hate him so much they have thrown away his epistles—some are professing Christians, too! But, Paul was no self-proclaimed apostle like today’s false teachers: he was an apostle of God (Romans 1:1; 1 Corinthians 1:1; et cetera).

God’s handpicked man to the Gentiles was Paul, a little Jew who once hated the name of Jesus of Nazareth and imprisoned or killed anyone who embraced Jesus as Messiah-King. Now, as God’s chosen vessel to the Gentiles, the Lord was using him to promote the Gospel of Grace that was entrusted to his ministry. Paul’s converts were formerly pagan Gentiles; now, they were serving the one true living God! Paul was not an egotist; the Holy Spirit, in the above passage, commended Paul.

In fact, in order for the twelve apostles of Israel to understand God was now going to do something different with another Apostle Paul, the Lord had Paul perform miracles to prove to Peter, James, John, and the others that God was using him to go to the Gentiles. Look at Acts 15:12 KJV: “Then all the multitude kept silence, and gave audience to Barnabas and Paul, declaring what miracles and wonders God had wrought among the Gentiles by them.”

CONCLUSION

So, there are three reasons why Paul performed miracles and water baptized in the early part of his ministry:

  1. The miracle working given to Paul’s ministry and those early Gentile believers were used to provoke unbelieving Israel to jealousy, to show Israel that God was moving away from her and ministering to the Gentiles through Paul.
  2. Paul grew up in the dispensation in which Israel’s miracles and water baptism were necessary. The concept of “progressive revelation” tells us that the Lord gradually revealed doctrine to Paul, eventually telling the apostle it is no longer necessary to water baptize. Miracles and spiritual gifts were done away with when the Word of God was completed.
  3. For any Jews, unbelieving or believing, Paul’s miracle working validated his apostleship.
