Life Lessons Gained from the Scriptures (by Nolan Guilbeau)

One is either a friend of Jesus Christ of the Scriptures or an enemy—there is no neutral ground. Christians as well can become enemies of Christ by simply failing to present to his fellow man the simple gospel plan of salvation and lift up Christ’s finished work of redemption at Calvary’s cross.

According to Scriptures the un-regenerated (unbelievers) with all their good works and intentions—defined “synergism”—assisting God to merit His favor are and remain the natural enemies of Christ. They attempt to add to the finished work of Christ by their own righteousness. “For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves to the righteousness of God” (Romans 10:3).

When Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus, Judas made his appearance in the garden of Gethsemane for the purpose of publicly identifying the Savior before a crowd of high priests and Roman soldiers. Although Judas finally revealed himself as a depraved character and a counterfeit believer, he didn’t attempt to hide his identity. This is unlike some of the nonperson bloggers who use monikers (screen names) and persistently make snide remarks especially when Bible-believing Christian writings are published. In all honesty they reveal themselves to the public with the characteristic of hypocrites, cowards, as uncultured, without honor, reflecting this world’s ungodly system and in desperate need of the Spirit of Christ. They present themselves as intellectuals hiding their identity behind disguised names making nonsensical comments.

But, of course, this is America, and no one would deny them of their freedom of speech. Christians are also entitled to this privilege, unless we as a society have regressed to the Dark Ages as in the period of the Inquisition instituted by a debauched, tyrannical and controlling religious system.

The spirit of antichrist in this world wants to silence/censor the genuine Christian and the true gospel message of Christ of the Scriptures because they fear we might be right! The gospel message is foolishness to those who are lost (I Corinthians 1:18). However, if the Christian writer’s messages of quoting Scripture are offensive to some, there is no need to despair, turn in sincerity and humility to the Scriptures ask the Lord for understanding, or simply turn the page!

The prophet Jeremiah and King David wrote, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?” (Jeremiah 17:9) “Through thy precepts, I get understanding, therefore, I hate every FALSE way” (Psalms 119:104).

Application of this latter verse of Scripture can solve many of life’s problems by acquiring Biblical understanding. The Lord gives an invitation for all to “come to him.” According to Scriptures one can experience a life-changing miracle defined as eternal “salvation” of the human soul! (1 Corinthians 15:1-4; Ephesians 2:8-9; 1 Timothy 2:3-6; Titus 3:5).

Step into God’s Grace

God is a gracious God, pouring undeserved mercy on all of humanity. As long as the Holy Spirit opens a person’s heart to the truth of the Gospel of the Grace of God, that person is confronted with a free will choice to either accept or reject God’s salvation.

Have you been taught that you have to do something to please God so that He will accept you? According to the Bible, this statement is completely false, not to mention blasphemous to God. How sad it is that people have overly-complicated salvation, and most church members are lost, confused, and Scripturally unlearned. People casually stroll to church out of obligation, but there is no genuine hunger for God’s Word. In recent decades, the vast majority have enjoyed Sundays but completely ignored God’s Word. Shame.

It is very dangerous to rely solely upon what you hear in church. We need more “Bereans,” and fewer “Sunday Christians” who warm pews and take power naps! Please search the Scriptures, and remember that every statement you hear in church MUST fit in perfect accordance with the Bible (Acts 17:10-11). Study your Bible.

Grace is defined as “unmerited favor,” apart from works (Romans 3:18-28; Ephesians 2:8,9). If God’s grace were dependant on what we did, we would never, ever see grace because merited grace is a negation. Grace was the ultimate factor that sent Christ to die on a Roman cross. The epitome of God’s grace was the Lord Jesus Christ, humbly becoming flesh only to shed His blood and die for us. Before any of you had a chance to merit favor and grace, Christ had already provided grace and favor 2000 years before! “While we were yet sinners, Christ died for the ungodly” (Romans 5:1-11). The Lord paid the price in full, and you need do nothing but trust in His death, burial, and resurrection!

If we never check to see what God’s Word says, how will we ever determine what we hear in church is true? Eternity is not something you take lightly: eternity is how long God lives, and God lives forever. Let me be emphatically clear that everyone will live out eternity in one of two places: heaven or hell, dependent entirely on their denial or acceptance of the Gospel of Grace of 1 Corinthians 15:1-4.

You must lean entirely upon this Gospel alone, without working for salvation, in order to go to heaven.

Jesus of Nazareth is God

When you hear the name of “Jesus,” what or who comes to memory? Most would immediately think of a humble Jewish carpenter who died a martyr’s death 2,000 years ago. Jesus was and is so much more than that—there is no one else like Him, and no one will ever come close to measuring up to Him.

Jesus Christ spoke to Moses in the burning bush at Mount Sinai (John 8:52-58 cf. Exodus 3:12-14). Jesus Christ was and is the LORD of the Old Testament (1 Timothy 6:15; Revelation 4:8). Jesus Christ was the Creator God of Genesis 1:1 (John 1:1-4,14; Ephesians 3:9 in KJV; Hebrews 1:1,2; Revelation 4:11). Jesus Christ is the Son of God: that is to say, God manifested in the flesh (Romans 1:4). The Bible tells us that Jesus Christ is the sole Mediator between God and humans (1 Timothy 2:5).

Philippians 2:6-11 is an awesome passage regarding Jesus of Nazareth: “[Christ], being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: but made himself of no reputation, and took upon himself the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: and being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

Stop and think. The Lord God Almighty stooped to our level—willingly—just to provide the remission of sins with His divine blood. Jesus left all His glory behind, and let His created beings crucify Him, just so we undeserved sinners could enjoy His free gift of grace and salvation. He knew it all before it happened, but He never turned back. There was no anesthetic as He hung: He chose to remain on that cross to die for every person’s sins. Jesus Christ is not rotting away in a grave, but He broke the powers of hell and the devil. Jesus Christ resurrected in great power (1 Corinthians 15:1-4), never to die again. Is Jesus Christ just your Creator, or is He your personal Saviour?

Pure Abounding Grace

Pure Abounding Grace
by Shawn Brasseaux

[12 August 2008]

Humans are wicked, undeserving creatures. God owes us absolutely nothing, and we are in no position to demand anything from Him. So, if humans are so unworthy of salvation, how can salvation be free and be available to everyone? One special attribute of God is His grace, which is defined as His “unmerited favor” toward us. God’s grace has prompted Him to pour out mercy on undeserving humanity (God had to pour out His wrath on Christ Jesus at Calvary; see Isaiah chapter 53).

Had it not been for God’s grace, the Lord Jesus Christ would have never gone to the cross, and we would have all been eternally condemned with no hope whatsoever. Because of God’s grace, very person will have at least one opportunity to hear of Jesus Christ and the Gospel of the Grace of God.

Consider John 1:7-10 KJV:

“7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.
8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.
9 That was
the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.
10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.”

Look at Colossians 1:23 KJV: “If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;” Titus 2:11 KJV says: “For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,”

In the Bible, the first instance of God’s grace can be found in the Garden of Eden. In Genesis chapter 3, Adam and Eve made use of their free will, eating of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil when God forbade them. Adam and Eve heard the LORD walking in the garden, so they hid in shame. God called to Adam, “Where are you?” Obviously, God knew exactly where Adam and Eve were, but He was calling Adam in order for Adam and Eve to admit that they had sinned and disobeyed Him.

Even when Adam and Eve deliberately disobeyed, it was God’s grace that moved Him to go to them. Adam and Eve had no intention of going to God on their own. God’s grace drew God to them, and God’s grace drew them to God. If God’s grace were absent, then Adam and Eve would have been just left alone in their sin, and humanity would have abandoned. There would be no chance of a Saviour. God’s grace moved Him to promise a Saviour, to redeem Adam and Eve and all future generations of humanity (Genesis 3:15). Adam took that promise to heart, and called his wife “Eve,” meaning “life.” Adam knew that even though they would (spiritually and physically) die because of their sin, God promised they would still live forever because of their faith in what God said.

Another example of God’s grace can be found in the book of Acts. Before his conversion, Saul (later on, renamed the Apostle Paul) was a persecutor of the Jewish believers, and he was an enemy of Jesus Christ during His earthly ministry (Acts 26:9-11; Galatians 1:13,14). Read 1 Corinthians 15:9: “For I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.” Shortly after the martyrdom of Stephen in Acts chapter 7, we find in Acts chapter 9 that Saul is heading to Damascus, to seek and arrest the Jewish believers in Jesus Christ. On his way, Saul gets the shock of a lifetime…

“3 And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven:
4 And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?
5 And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.
6 And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do.”
(Acts 9)

Until now, Saul never realized that the LORD of the Old Testament was the same Jesus Christ whom he hated! Saul hated Jesus, and wanted to destroy anyone claiming to be a follower of Jesus of Nazareth.

God could have just rightfully and righteously taken Saul out of this world, and sent him off to hell. It was grace that allowed God have mercy on Saul, and save him by that grace. Paul later wrote in Galatians 1:15,16 KJV: “But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother’s womb, and called me by his grace, to reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the heathen….”

As evidence that Paul never forgot about the grace that saved him, most of Paul’s letters open with the phrase: “[God’s] Grace to you.” The Lord took Paul’s pathetic, iniquitous life of destroying the Jewish church, and by means of grace, God transformed Paul into the apostle of the Gentiles (Acts 9:15,16; Romans 11:13; Romans 15:16; Galatians 1:16; 1 Timothy 2:6,7; 2 Timothy 1:11). Paul went on to be the greatest man of God. Amazing? Indeed, but it all depended on God’s grace alone!

In today’s world, God’s grace is still functioning as it did with Adam and Eve and with Paul. Despite our unworthiness, God is freely offering salvation to every single person on the planet. The Lord is opening people’s hearts and minds, and opening their eyes to His truth (people are accepting the Gospel of Grace by faith, thereby being saved). God opened Lydia’s heart in Acts 16:14,15 so that she was willing to listen to Paul’s sermon and receive salvation through the Gospel of Grace. God is still doing that today with the unbelievers as they hear the Gospel, either from our lips and our “pens,” or from reading the Bible themselves. Once God’s grace influences them, they have a chance to freely receive salvation. God does not force them, He simply introduces them to a chance to have a knowledge of salvation, and they have the free will choice of denying or accepting it. Again, God has not selected some for hell and the rest for heaven; we can choose to believe Jesus Christ, or we can refuse to do so.

Without God’s grace opening the person to the Truth, it would be impossible for that person to get saved. The reason for this is found in 2 Corinthians 4:3,4, where the Apostle Paul writes that Satan has blinded (or veiled) the minds and hearts of the unbelievers, so that they do not understand or believe the Gospel. God must intervene (by means of His grace), and open this person’s understanding by removing this spiritual blindness. Every person who has ever been saved is saved simply because God was gracious enough to save them….

God’s grace compelled Him to take our place. What wondrous grace it was!!!

Pure Abounding Grace II
by Shawn Brasseaux

[28 March 2009]

In August 2008, I wrote a study titled “Pure Abounding Grace.” In it, I discussed God’s unmerited favor toward the human race. I pointed out that God showed no reluctance to die in order to save us, His enemies, from something we deserved—eternal isolation from Him, suffering in the lake of fire forever and ever. Instead of wiping Adam, Eve, and Saul of Tarsus from existence, He saved all three of them when they had no interest in Him or His grace! There are no “good sinners” or “bad sinners”: all humans are sinners, all BAD sinners to be precise. Because of the Ten Commandments, we are ALL guilty before God, no exceptions (Romans 3:19,20). We are all sons of Adam, despite our good works or our “outstanding (?) performance” in religious rituals.

Instead of being moderate by speaking out against sin in a LOVING manner (as Christ would), we have those who are saying absolutely nothing, and those who are saying too much. Some people claim to adhere to Christianity, but have no interest in upholding God’s standards and they compromise with the worldview. Others use God’s Word to promote hatred (and even violence) toward unbelievers. Westboro Baptist Church in Kansas is the prime example of a “ministry” that professes to be serving the God of the Bible, yet they are acting contrary to God’s instructions! Their picket signs contain hateful messages that disgrace, not promote, the Gospel of Christ. “We are ambassadors for [the risen] Christ” (2 Corinthians 5:20). When we come in the name of Christ, we should be representing Him, not misrepresenting Him.

Earlier this month, there was a very wacky guy preaching on my college campus. Although I was not present, some of my classmates heard what he said, and they were asking me what I thought. I told them I was not there to hear it all, so I could not say whether he was right or wrong. When I went to his website a short time later, I found his beliefs were greatly perverted doctrinally. According to him, “Catholics, gays, and all kinds of other people he had grouped were going to hell because of their lifestyles!” People are not going to hell because of their sins, they are going to hell because their nature is the root of the problem—we go to hell, not because we sin, but because we are sinners!!! This “servant of God” emphasized repentance for salvation, and all sorts of other religious (denominational) doctrine. From the video footage I saw on the internet, his words were only angering people at my college—God’s Word angers people, but this guy was preaching religion, not “Christ crucified” in a meek and gentle manner. Remember Titus 3:2-7?

People do not go to hell because of their religious affiliation: they go to hell because they are lost and dead in their trespasses and sins! As one Bible teacher aptly explained, “We are not sinners because we sin; we sin because we are sinners.” In other words, our sin nature causes us to sin; us sinning does not create our sin nature.

Gay people go to hell because they are sons of Adam, not because they are gay.

A drunkard goes to hell because he is lost, faithless in God’s Word, not because he drinks alcohol.

Rich people do not go to hell because they are wealthy; they go to hell because they oftentimes have faith in their fortune instead of in God’s Word!

Smoking cigarettes, getting drunk, and committing adultery does not lead to hell—just being a sinner leads to hell! We are all HUMANS, descendants of Adam, disobedient to God’s Word, and headed for a devil’s hell if we do not believe what God’s Word says to us regarding salvation.

If I were not in Christ tonight, where would I be right now? Dealing drugs? Committing fornication? Vandalizing? Perhaps murdering someone? Maybe something worse? We all have the potential, but as members of the Church the Body of Christ we have the indwelling Holy Spirit who shows us what sin is (using His written Word) and who empowers us to have lives that are pleasing in His sight. Let us remember to never get a self-righteous, goody-goody Pharisaical attitude, “lest we fall” (1 Corinthians 10:12,13). We could be end up where those ungodly people are in a moment’s notice.

The contents of 1 Corinthians 6:9,10, Galatians 5:19-21, and Revelation 21:8 are filthiness and ungodliness in God’s eyes, but all sin is covered by God’s grace (Romans 5:20). In 1 Corinthians 6:11, we actually read that the Corinthians “were” (past tense) once pagan, immoral Gentiles. Now that they were saved, they were justified, sanctified, and washed! Forgiveness is being offered to everyone, whether you are black or white, rich or poor, church member or atheist. [Remember, this is never license to do as you please!]

The only prerequisites to salvation are God’s grace and forgiveness, and you already have both! You do not need to beg for God’s mercy, for He already proved (and provided) His grace to you through the Lord Jesus Christ. Again, you have nothing to do but place in what the Lord Jesus Christ has already done for you. It is that simple, basic so that even a small child could have the assurance of salvation.

According to 1 Corinthians 15:1-4, the Word—the Creator God, the Lord Jesus Christ—took on flesh to die as a man, to shed His sinless blood to forgive you of all your sins: past, present, and future. On the third day, He resurrected in great power in order to justify you. He was under no obligation, but He did it because of His grace, when you were not interested in reconciliation with Him. When you were on your way to hell, He threw out a lifesaver. Trust in Christ Jesus alone, and He will save you forever. Set aside your pride, and take it by faith… God’s pure abounding grace….

arC Quote: “You cannot look down on the world if you are humbly kneeling at the foot of the cross.”

Works-Religion is Not Enough

August 8, 2008

The (Opelousas, Louisiana) Daily World

Please note again that I am not here to attack anyone. Are you tired of being in a religion filled with strict, burdensome guidelines? Are you expected to adhere to a denomination handbook filled with a lengthy “to-do” list? People who are steeped in legalism and works-based religion are bound. They admit that they are scared to death to make a wrong move. If they leave that religion and convert to Christianity, they are threatened with a message of eternal condemnation in hell. Is not there something better?

Contrary to popular belief, Biblical Christianity is not “religion.” How true the statement that “religion is man seeking God through his own filthy works; Christianity is God reaching down to man through Jesus Christ’s finished work on Calvary.” There is something better than works based religion: His name is the Lord Jesus Christ, the Creator God.

Did you know that God despises religion? Really, He does. Meriting favor by doing something literally cancels what Christ Jesus already did for us (Romans 11:6; Galatians 5:1-6). After all Christ’s suffering, pain, and His willingness to die for us, people turn around and say, “Lord, that was not enough; I have to do something now.” They undermine the power of Christ’s precious blood by working to merit favor. Christ died for neither the sinless nor the “good enough” people. The Lord “died for the ungodly” (Romans 5:6) and He “tasted death for every man” (Hebrews 2:9). You do not have to go to hell unless you chose to go there.

Eternal life is being handed out freely, without any cost to you whatsoever (Romans 3:23-31). Stop ignoring what Jesus Christ did for you, before it is eternally too late. You do not have to toil and sweat. You do not have to doubt if you really are going to make it. You can actually rest at night, knowing you are eternally secure in Christ. Please, for your own sakes; call upon the Lord while He is still near. Come to the foot of the cross, as an undeserved sinner, and recognize that Christ shed His blood for the remission of your sins, that He died, was buried, and rose again from the dead (1 Corinthians 15:1-4).

God Chose to Give Us Free Will

July 22, 2008

by Shawn Brasseaux
Published in The (Opelousas, Louisiana) Daily World

When God created Adam and Eve, He instilled a free will in their innermost being. God gave them advice, not to mention giving them the opportunity to believe Him or to choose their own way. God did not force them to follow His instructions, as they both made conscious decisions—they chose the latter and ate (we now suffer those consequences).

We are all capable of making rational, intelligent decisions on our own: God could have created programmed robots, but instead has given us minds to use. We can choose to constantly avoid God, or we can choose to be submissive to Him. We can take God at His Word by placing our faith in everything Christ did for us at Calvary, or we can reject it and suffer the consequences. Either choose eternal condemnation in hell, or choose eternal life in heaven.

When the lost unbelieving world stands before God in eternity, they will be there because of their unbelief in God’s Word. They chose to ignore His Word and scoff at it, time and time again. God presented them with truth, but they scorned It every time. “Christ tasted death for every man” (Hebrews 2:9). Every single person reading this has an opportunity to be cleansed from their sins. I present the only two choices: (1) you can believe and trust entirely in the Grace Gospel of 1 Corinthians 15:1-4: “Christ died for our sins, His blood was shed, He was buried, and He rose again,” or (2) you can do things your own way.

Consider what God said in Proverbs 14:12: “There is a way which seemeth right unto man [like meriting favor and working for salvation], but the end thereof is death [going to hell].” You can be defiant towards God, like the majority of the world, and be sent to eternal doom, or you can you come to God by way of the cross, as a lost sinner in dire need of precious salvation, being eternally forgiven all your sins. How amazing! I cannot force you, so you will have to do this out of your own volition. You choose. (I strongly encourage you to follow the advice of the omniscient God.

We are all without excuse, as we have all heard God’s truth numerous times (Romans 1:20; Titus 2:11,12).

The Bible is Not Nonsense

July 18, 2008

by Shawn Brasseaux
Published in The (Opelousas, Louisiana) Daily World

Even before the Word of God was written in human languages, the devil attacked anything that God said. In Genesis 3:1, Satan (in the visible form of a snake) beguiled the first woman, Eve, by placing doubt in her mind. The devil asked, “Did God really say that you could not eat of that tree?” Eve did not even remember what God actually said (Genesis 2:16,17 cf. Genesis 3:3). God said nothing about touching the tree; He merely said, “Thou shalt not eat of it.”

But, why is the devil so fixated on attacking the Word of God? Every single statement in the Bible is 100 percent accurate and truthful, and the “father of lies” (the devil; John 8:44) can only promote deception by first distorting the truth. In order for us to distinguish the truth from the lies, the truth must first be established. The truth has already been confirmed in the Word of God, giving us the means to distinguish the deception from the truth.

Even to the present day, the devil is still twisting and wresting Scripture by either adding apocryphal books or bringing in “better” newer translations that only “water down and paraphrase” God’s Word. (By the way, if all English translations say the same thing, why do we need all of these English translations?)

Why is most of our world lost and unlearned in the Bible? The devil has hidden the glorious Gospel of the Grace of God (1 Corinthians 15:1-4) from them, so they remain in spiritual darkness (2 Corinthians 4:3,4). Why is there so much confusion amongst church members? It is a satanic ploy to make confusion of Scripture, to deter everyone from studying their Bible. If no one understands the Bible, they most certainly will not be interested in reading it. Satan keeps the masses in complete darkness, but everyone will have at least one chance to be presented with the truth.

The devil’s lies are infiltrating our society right now, but if you stay in the true Word of God, you will not be led astray as so many have already been. I use the Authorized King James Version (66 books), which is a reliable 400-year-old translation. The so-called “Elizabethan English” is not as difficult to read as most have been led to believe: “If thou truly art in search of the truth, the Lord God shall reveal His Word to thee.”

Tips for Thorough Biblical Studies

July 17, 2008

by Shawn Brasseaux
Published in
The (Opelousas, Louisiana) Daily World

There are so few Bible students in this day and age. Sadly, most churchgoers would rather listen to a weekly “feel good” sermon than draw wisdom from God’s Word on daily basis. No one cares to correctly teach the Bible, which is such a tragedy because we have no Scriptural knowledge to combat the false teaching. For anyone who is interested in studying the Bible on his or her own, here are some useful tips that I would like to share:

  • PRAY. Before you open a King James Bible, please pray for wisdom (2 Timothy 2:7; James 1:5). In order for you to get the most profit from the Scriptures, the Holy Spirit must open your understanding (1 Corinthians 2:13). The Lord will not reveal His Word to you if you show no interest in learning.
  • RIGHTLY DIVIDE SCRIPTURE. “Contradictions” in Scripture arise when people do not “rightly divide the word of truth.” God designed His Word to be studied in a specific way. “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of Truth” (2 Timothy 2:15). The Old Testament, the Four Gospels, and Hebrews through Revelation were written to Jews. Only 13 Bible books were written to us Gentiles: Romans through Philemon (Paul is the Apostle of the Gentiles; Romans 11:13). I encourage you to read the Old Testament and the Four Gospels, as they contain background information (Romans 15:4). However, I strongly encourage you to separate Jew and Gentile teachings (confusion begins when you mix the Mosaic Law with Grace; Romans 6:15). Refer to the first chapter of the specific Bible book, to see who is writing (Moses, Paul, Isaiah, Luke, et cetera), and to whom was he writing (Jews under Law, or Gentiles under Grace). This is vital to your keeping Law separate from Grace.
  • EXTRA STUDY TIPS.
    • Use a Bible concordance (like Strong’s), comparing passages that focus on specific topics.
    • Study your Bible, compare Scripture with Scripture—reading just one verse a day is not what God expects from Christians.
    • Ask questions as you read, and try to find answers in the Bible.
    • The best place for anyone new to the Bible to begin is the book of Romans, which is the most basic book of Christian living today.
    • May you learn from the Bible, as God intended!

The Debate in Christendom: Justified by Faith, or by Faith Plus Works?

July 11, 2008

by Shawn Brasseaux

Perhaps the greatest point of contention between Protestants and Roman Catholics is “justification by faith alone” (Protestant) versus “justification by faith plus works” (Catholic). This disagreement sparked what is known as “the Protestant Reformation” in the 16th century. The Protestants quote Romans 3:28 where the Bible says, “Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.” Roman Catholics use James 2:24 where the Bible says, “Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.” Which group is correct? How can we resolve this conflict, seeing as to the Bible supports both views? Does the Bible contradict itself? We will examine this issue in the following study, and clear up the abounding confusion that religion has accomplished.

God is an omniscient (all-knowing) Being, so what kind of answer does God have? Let us consider the instructions found in 2 Timothy 2:15 KJV: “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

The serious Bible student knows that God tells different things to different people at different times—this is how to solve the dilemma between Romans 3:28 and James 2:24. While this seems like a contradiction within God’s Word, it is not (undoubtedly, God’s Word is inerrant, perfect and without mistake). This is called a dispensational change, and these changes are apparent throughout the Bible. God has designed His Word to be studied dispensationally; alas, people refuse to use God’s Word God’s way so they create an unbelievable amount of confusion (see the first paragraph)!

We must be very careful about applying Scripture to us when that part of the Bible was not written to us. All of the Bible is for us, but not all of the Bible is to us or about us. For instance, when God told Noah to build an ark, obviously that was God’s message to Noah—that is not something God expects us to do. Case in point is that portions of the Bible are written to various groups of people, and we must establish the audience of the passages if we are to make sense of what the passages say. Before we claim a Bible verse/passage as though God wrote it to us, we need to understand the context and determine the audience of the verse/passage. To whom is Romans 3:28 written? To whom is James 2:24 written? This is information we need to know, so let us see what the Holy Scriptures say.

Let us look at Galatians 2:9 KJV: “And when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given unto me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship; that we should go unto the heathen, and they unto the circumcision.” (In other words, James, Cephas [Peter], and John agree to continue ministering to the believing remnant of Israel, and Paul and Barnabas agree to continue ministering to everyone else.)

James 1:1 says that James is writing to the nation Israel (“the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad”). Paul writes in Romans 11:13 that he is “the apostle of the Gentiles” (cf. Romans 15:16; 2 Timothy 1:11). James is writing to the dispersed Jewish believers of the Gospel of the Kingdom (from Christ’s earthly ministry), and Paul is writing to members of the Church the Body of Christ. We are not Israel; therefore, James is not writing to us (refer back to Galatians 2:9, where James said he would only minister to Jews, not to us Gentiles). Romans 3:28 is written to us; James 2:24 is not.

Dispensational Bible study shows us that the nation Israel and the Church the Body of Christ are two separate entities in God’s dealings with man: things that apply to Israel may not necessarily apply to us in the Body of Christ, and vice versa. For instance, the Gospel of Grace revealed to Paul (Romans 2:16; Romans 16:25,26; Ephesians 3:1-11; 2 Timothy 2:8) was not the same as the Gospel of the Kingdom preached to Israel during Christ’s earthly ministry (Matthew 3:1-6; Matthew 9:35). Or, as a second example, Exodus chapter 20 tells us that Israel was under the demands of the Mosaic Law (cf. Galatians 4:4,5), whereas Paul writes in Romans 6:14,15 that the Church the Body of Christ is “not under the law, but under grace.” A third example is water baptism was necessary for salvation in Israel’s program (Matthew 28:19; Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38), but it is totally unnecessary for us today (1 Corinthians 1:17; Corinthians 12:13; Ephesians 4:5).

Throughout the Old Testament, God gave the Jews specific requirements to follow. The Mosaic Law—the Ten Commandments and the 613 laws of Judaism—commanded the observance of the Sabbath day, the feast days, the new moons, Temple worship, the Levitical priesthood, the animals’ blood sacrifices, the tithe, the kosher food laws, and so on. We need to view the book of James in this manner: James focuses on works-religion because Judaism is the works-religion God gave to Israel.

Jesus never preached against Law-keeping in His earthly ministry. In fact, the Lord Jesus commanded Law-keeping if one was to have eternal life in Israel’s program: “but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments” (Matthew 19:17). So, are we to keep the Mosaic Law today if we want to have eternal life? While this is what Jesus said He never us it to us: during His earthly ministry, He was speaking to the nation Israel (Matthew 15:24; John 4:22; Romans 15:8). James is writing his epistle to coincide with the doctrine Christ preached years before in His earthly ministry.

Does Mosaic Law-keeping fit into our lives today as members of the Church the Body of Christ? According to God, “For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace” (Romans 6:15). Paul, writing to us as non-Jews, tells us that we are not bound by the Mosaic Law. We are living in “the dispensation of the grace of God” (Ephesians 3:2). This dispensation (or “economy”) does not involve works-religion or the nation Israel.

The Dispensation of Grace began with Paul, with Israel’s Dispensation of Law diminishing over a period of a few decades in the first century A.D. Believing Jews of Christ’s earthly ministry (the “little flock;” Luke 12:32) were confusing believing Gentiles of Paul’s ministry (the Church the Body of Christ). Jews, who did not understand the dispensational transition from Law to Grace, were now attempting to force Law-keeping on the Church the Body of Christ, but this is not what God intended. The Body of Christ was separate from Israel’s religion of Judaism, and God wanted to keep it that way. This is why, in Acts chapter 15 and Galatians chapter 2, Israel’s apostles met with the Apostle Paul and Barnabas and they agreed—Paul and Barnabas would go to the Gentiles and James, Peter, and John would minister to Israel (see Galatians 2:9).

The book of Galatians warns us not to fall into the trap of legalism like the poor believers in Galatia were doing. In that epistle, Paul wrote that if we are justified by faith plus works, “Christ shall profit us nothing” and we have “fallen from grace” (Galatians 5:2,4 KJV). It is not that we were saved and then lost, but rather we have given up on grace, and preferred works-religion. We want to go back under Israel’s performance-based acceptance system of obeying God to get blessings and getting the curses when we disobey God. If we are to be saved by grace, then works cannot save us too! Romans 11:6 KJV tells us: “And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then it is no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.”

Just like we are saved by faith today, so was Abraham. Romans 4:2,3 KJV: “For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God. For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.” The Law of Moses did not come until 500 years after Abraham, so Abraham was not justified by Law-keeping. By the same token, because the Law of Moses was put to death with the Lord Jesus Christ on Calvary (Colossians 2:14), the Law of Moses cannot condemn us today and the Mosaic Law cannot justify us today!

In Romans 4:4, Paul wrote that if we attempted to work for salvation by meriting favor with God, then “the reward [salvation] is not of grace [unmerited favor], but of debt.” By working for salvation, you are demanding that God owes you something—this is contrary to grace, which is unmerited favor. “But to him that worketh not, but believeth [trusts] on him [Christ] that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness” (Romans 4:5 KJV).

We do not expect James to agree with Paul’s statement because they are writing to different groups of people under different circumstances. James is writing from the legalistic standpoint because Judaism is all that he knows, and this is all that God expects him to know. Both Paul and James are correct in their doctrine, as long as we keep Paul’s epistles within the Dispensation of Grace (today) and leave James’ epistle with Israel—this is how God says we solve the so-called “contradiction” between Paul and James. Leave the verses in their proper dispensations, and all the confusion goes away.

It is extremely important for us to understand that no one was ever saved by simply doing good works. In every dispensation, from Adam to the end of time, faith is the primary issue. But, every dispensation demanded good works to follow that faith (except our dispensation, the Dispensation of Grace). For example, Adam, Eve, Cain, and Abel were—by faith—expected to sacrifice animals’ blood for remission of sins (Genesis 4:4). They could not be saved by faith alone. Noah built an ark by faith (Genesis 6:22). If Noah had faith alone, and no works (building the ark), he would have drowned!!! By faith, the nation Israel followed God’s instructions regarding the Mosaic Law—tithe, Sabbath day, kosher food laws, animal sacrifices, and so on. In Christ’s earthly ministry, repentance (change in mind) and water baptism were to follow faith.

In Israel’s program, “Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone” (James 2:17,20) and “Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect” (James 2:22)? A person of faith in Israel’s program would believe what God said and then do what God said. Faith would motivate that person to do what God said to do. If that person did not do what God said to do, it was a visible sign that the individual did not have any faith in God, and was therefore an unbeliever (see John 7:29,30)!

Most of my own community and family are steeped in works-religion to this very day; over 90 percent of my region adheres to Roman Catholicism. Good works by themselves never saved anyone, even in Israel; God always required faith first (Hebrews 11:6)! The Law condemns everyone, the Jews and the Gentiles (Romans 3:10,19,20,23). God designed the Mosaic Law to prove to us that we are sinners (Romans 7:5-12). Why can you not get to heaven by “keeping the Ten Commandments?” If you commit one single sin (such as telling a “white lie”), according to James 2:10, you are guilty of breaking every commandment.

Today, in the Dispensation of Grace, we are under a totally different set of circumstances. The Law has been put to death with Christ and is taken out of the way (Colossians 2:13-15). We do not have any Mosaic Law to keep today; we as believers in Christ have the indwelling Holy Spirit to show us right from wrong (Romans 7:1-6). Romans 1:16, Romans 3:26, 1 Corinthians 1:21, Ephesians 2:8,9 say that salvation is given to everyone who believes in Jesus [that is, trusts/has faith in the Gospel of 1 Corinthians 15:1-4, that Christ died for our sins, He was buried, and He was raised again the third day]. There is nothing in these verses about works needed for salvation—no tongues, no repenting, no water baptism, no tithe, no confession of sins, no sacraments, nothing but faith. Also see Romans 10:4, 10. The Apostle Paul said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved” (Acts 16:30). No works are necessary for salvation!

Instead of us being under the demands of the Mosaic Law, God tells us that we should place our faith in Paul’s Gospel, the Gospel of the Grace of God: “Christ died for our sins, [His blood was shed,] He was buried, and He rose again the third day” (1 Corinthians 15:1-4). God will not make any exceptions for anyone who hears this Gospel and denies it: if you are not “in Christ” (indwelt by the Holy Spirit, and sealed by the Holy Spirit) the moment you die, God demands that you not be allowed into heaven. You have no place to go but the everlasting lake of fire!

Why Do ‘Good’ People Suffer?

In her recent letter to the editor, Ms. A.L.B. proposed a very intriguing question (Daily World, July 7): why do so many good people have so much trouble? I do not have all the answers, but God has shed some light on the subject. Once sin entered into the world, God righteously and fairly placed a curse on creation. It was not God’s fault, as He warned Adam and Eve of the consequences. In addition to this curse on the earth, the devil has been temporarily allowed to make us all suffer even more. Again, we cannot fully understand every aspect. We can rest assured that God has not lost control of anything.

Why do good people suffer? Did you know that most of the apostles met a martyr’s death? As the apostle of the Gentiles, Paul endured all sorts of pain: nearly 200 lashes, stoned once, and caned, for instance (2 Corinthians 11:22-28). It was all for the sake of spreading the Gospel of 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 to the Gentile (non-Jew) world. Did you realize that millions of Christians have been persecuted for the last two millennia because of their adherence to the Bible’s teaching instead of basing their salvation on men’s ideas? Jesus Christ, God incarnate, suffered horrific and graphic pain—just so you could have a chance to reside in His presence forever!

Even before people tried to merit favor with God, He had already poured out His grace on us and He poured His wrath out on Christ. Now, a similar question is proposed: “Why do bad people receive good things?” Why do undeserved humans have the free gift of salvation? I am undeserving, but why is salvation without cost for me? Why did God not make it to where we would have to complete a “to-do” list before we could get salvation? We do not deserve anything, and God owes us absolutely nothing. So, why would God be generous, when we do not even deserve a single ounce of grace? It is because grace is unmerited favor; it was His grace that prompted Him to suffer in your stead.

Fellow Christians, in our sufferings, God’s grace is sufficient, and His strength made mature in our weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9,10).
